Interesting Motor Trend Review

Got home today to the August issue of Motor Trend. The M twins are on the cover and look great.

The numbers in their tests stood out from the other reviews I have read:

M3 DCT at 3.8 to 60, 12.1 in the quarter mile @ 117.8 mph - 3590 Lbs
M4 DCT at 3.9 to 60, 12.1 in the quarter mile @ 119.1 mph - 3588 Lbs

This sentence taken from the article was also a surprise: "Cars equipped with the optional M Drivers Package get a limited top speed of 174" (rather than the standard 155)

What is the M drivers package? Adaptive suspension? This is the U.S. version of Motor Trend. Weird.

Dont have a scanner at my house but I did my best to get a picture on. Sorry for the poor quality. Can take more if you guys want to squint your way through the review.

Review was glowing.

M Drivers Package is a european option if I remember right... you pay extra and take a driving class with BMW, they say "ok we trust you a little more now" and increase the limiter.

likely not offered in the states since we'd never really have a "legal" reason to go that fast overall. No autobahn and whatnot.

edit: but who knows why this or that ever happens in business and politics.

They don't offer the M drivers package in US. Those are good numbers though, should be able to get into 11's with some simple bolt ons.

Thanks, makes sense. I thought that could have been it but look at Motor Trend tested cars as US spec cars. Either way, the possibility of it is more than enough for me.

So M4 traps higher? M4 may be quicker in a mile race.

Yup, plus mod sw will have no problem changing the rev limiter, not to mention hp/tq numbers though frankly it probably is close to max anyway in reference to engine max tolerances.

I forgot the smiley. It was meant to be a facetious statement given how people go on and on about weight.

Yes defiantly a fat driver in the M3. But before we get too excited here this was a US test so chances are the M4 driver was fat too. (wait a min i'm an American should I be saying that out loud )

Slightly smaller frontal area of the M4 maybe (2.23 vs 2.29) ?

Or just car-to-car variability...

Hum, it may be a while before this issue hits the newsstand. I plan to buy all magazines with a M3/M4 review and keep them.

M4 higher trap speed

M4 has slightly better aero (Cd = 0.76 vs. 0.78) because of smaller frontal area, so it will have the advantage as speed rises, all other things being equal.

Edit: See I was beat to this fact!

If the drag figure includes area then it would be CdA, not Cd. But then these numbers for CdA would be wrong. Where did they come from?

Cheers.

Couldn't it just be a difference in mileage/tire wear. The difference is so miniscule I can't believe this causing so much commotion

seems about right for the DCT

difference between the two cars trap speeds could be the result of many variables.. driver, track conditions, motor making slightly more power (not every single motor will produce exactly the same amount of power ya know)
