Burning oil

Hey all!

My F80 burns oil these days, about 1litre per 500 km. There is def a smell of burnt oil around the car. Mileage 90,000 km. Generally no visible smoke upon cold start but often a big cloud of smoke upon restarting the engine when warm and after it has been switched for a while and when taking off again.

Any idea what this could be? My dealer asked me to check oil consumption and see if the accepted level of 1.5litre per 1000km is exceeded, which I now know it is.

When you idle for let's say 10 minutes and press gas pedal, does it blow whiteish smoke? If it does, valve stems.

Sounds very much like a valve cover gasket. I could be off… but it’s worth looking for oil deposits on the manifold shield.

He should have bad smell through ventilation.

Yeah almost all my vcg came through the vents. One didn't as it wasn't leaking enough when I used it… worth the visual inspection just to check it isn't a contributing factor I guess.
