Fortunately they had it in stock, so I brought the car in this morning.

UNFORTUNATELY, they do NOT have the plastic oil drain plug in stock. So, this means that the car is stuck.

Screw for engine oil pan/plug: 11 11 7 849 396
Screw for differential: 33 11 7 525 064
The oil drain plug that I saw today is actually made by aluminum, are you sure it's plastic?

Every dealer makes up their own part number(s) for billing out oil in liters. Most buy the oil in large drums and "bill it out" on the repair order with an internal BMW part number. This can also be said of trans and diff fluids. So its always best to ask your dealer IF they are using the correct fluid(s).

Thanks Dack, I also noticed that the rear differential fluid my dealer put in is 83-22-1-467-993, which is used for the E9X M3s, is this what supposed to be?

^^^Ditto^^^ Dackelone

Here in the States the new Castrol Edge 0w-40 is LL01 and its" Made in Germany." I have not checked to see if they still make the original German Castrol in 0w-30.
I have a feeling this new 0w-40 is to compete with Mobil 1 european formula 0w-40.... me thinks.
I purchased a 5qt($25.xx) jug from wally world(walmart) for the winter months(Nov thru May) for my E46 M3.

So, to all of those that still get your hands dirty and due your own oil changes i say F the dealer and getherdone at home

The correct diff LSD oil is: Castrol SAF-XJ, API GL5 75w140 gear oil

It is the same oil as used in the e9x M3's diff.

On ///M cars you will have a reminder for the first oil service at 1,200 miles. You can see this when you start the car or go into the board computer thru the iDrive.

So I call my service associate this morning to make sure the have the plugs for the oil and differential because I didn't want to waste my time going up there.

He says they do. I get there and a hour into my appointment he comes and tells me, sorry we don't have the right one.

If that doesn't piss me off enough, he then tells me sorry we don't have any bmw loaners, but we have this shiny new Altima for you. Just very annoyed because I called them for this very purpose.

Just a heads up to anyone going to get their 1200 done soon. Make sure your service dept has their parts in stock if you don't want to be without your car until they get it. //End rant.

Yep same here. Dealer didn't have the plugs when I brought my car in so they ordered them and told me it would be in the next day. The next day comes and they call to tell me the plugs were out of stock at the warehouse they were ordered from and that they have them coming in rush from somewhere else. I asked him how does he know this new order will come in. What did he do differently than the other day when he ordered them the first time? He says he checked to make sure the other warehouse had them. OK pro tip - do this every time so that you don't tell a customer they will be in and not have it happen. I've worked the parts counter and there's nothing worse than ordering a part next day and having it back-ordered unexpectedly. This pisses off customers off big time! I've learned to call the warehouse to get confirmation the part will ship out next day for overnight orders.

I may have been an ass and copped an attitude about the whole thing but I think the parts department needs to get their shit together. I am also suffering from M3 withdrawal.

You are the reason I made sure to call before dropping my car off. Honestly I have bigger things to worry about, but when a customer has a genuine concern it's just amazing to me that you don't confirm with the shop before draining the oil. I was completely ignored and that just doesn't sit right with me.

Seems that the official figure really is "until it flows out of the diff" - cca. 1.3 liters

A little over 1.2 liters I think. Buy three 500ml bottles and your good to go!

Yes, exactly... you keep filling the "fill hole" until fluid pours out. Needless to say your car should be perfectly level when you change the diff fluid!

Thanks.
The dealer did this today, but this post helped me a lot. I wasn't surprised to hear that they didn't order the diff plug. Luckily, after I gave them the part no. they brought it from a nearby warehouse.

This was their first M3/4 and now they know more on what to do. Too bad I was the test rat.

In the ETK(electronic parts catalog) it only lists two oils:

BMW LL4 engine oil:

83 21 0 398 504 (0w-40)

or

83 21 0 398 507 (5w-30)

I'm sure the S55 will end up like the N55 in that BMW says you can use four different grades of oils on the N55: 0w30, 0w40, 5w30 & 5w40.

I will double check tomorrow in the ETK for the S55 engine oil grades - again.

BMW Quality Longlife-01 SAE 0W-40 (vollsynthetisch)ACEA: A3/B3, EC II
p/n 83 21 0 144 456

BMW Quality Longlife-01 SAE 5W-30 (vollsynthetisch)ACEA: A3/B3, EC II
MINI Quality
p/n 83 21 0 144 450

There are some other manufacture's of engine oil that are of different viscosities. Please see this pdf for them.

I don't know why. But my info comes right from the ETK and service traning info that BMW AG puts out for its dealers to use. My guess is someone miss proof read the owners manual. ETK is always more update, every month. Maybe in next year's owners manual it will say something different.

Yes.

Only real difference is that the engine oil in Germany/EU should be a LL-4 while for a car in the USA needs/requires an oil that is LL-1 rated.

LL-4 rated oil can be used in LL-1 regions. But not vice versa.
