AMG E53 Sedan Facelift
https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a3...s-photos-info/
The updates make the car look significantly better. Totally new headlights and taillights. They finally got rid of the ugly diamond dotted grille and also gave it a proper quad exhaust. Definitely going to shop this in a couple years when I get burnt out from the rigid ride of my F80 competition. Standard air suspension is very tempting. I expect a decently equipped one to come out to $80k. Which is the same sticker price as my F80. Not really interested in the E63 as I think that kind of power is overkill and don't want the jarring riding quality. |

It does look better.

Not super keen on the exterior, it looks nice, just not breathtakingly nice (not enough for me to buy a Merc at least). That interior though, holy moly that's killer. I'd buy that car just simply to be in that interior.

Car and Driver strikes again!
1. Yes... we know this type of power is utterly unnecessary (duh F90?). 2. FFS it's a damn AMG, the shocks will be stiffer. Stop whining about it in every, freaken, review you do. 3. I refuse to do Stock Handle shifting. It's far too abnormal. I'm not surprised by the update. A lot of Benz AMG cars have this face lift styling. So, it isn't new that's what it looks now. I'm still curious on if the E53 is the only one with a Coupe version as the E63 doesn't have Coupe. I know my family friend got a E53 Coupe because it was a two door and girls like two doors?

Not a fan of the updates, previous design looked more cohesive/consistant, headlights and taillights look a bit awkward on the new one, and the upside down grill doesn't work as well on the E as it does on my CLS, I prefer the more elegant looks from before. New steering wheel looks cool, but replacing all of the controls with touch-capacitive buttons is a bad move and looks/feels cheaper than the silver/metal knurled toggles and buttons.
Drift mode is the only update that I really like about the new car. |

Why?
Historically, AMG has done I4, I6 , V6, and V8 and V12 engines...

For me, it ain't an AMG if it's got no builder's signature on the engine cover. The equivalent of WBA vs. WBS VIN's.

I love the sound of the v8 amg and think those are “worth it” and really don’t think the current e43 and e53 are “worth it”. Also, aren’t the current “35”, “43” and “53” engines not hand built using the “one man one engine” philosophy? That’s a bigger deviation from amg “history” than cyl count. |

To me, those “35”, “43” and “53” models fall in the same category as the ///MXXX models from BMW.

They are the entry models. A C43 was a C400. It's just been rebadged. BMW is doing the same thing. All marketing.

As a 53 series Mercedes owner, I don't consider my car a real AMG, however, the "fake AMG" products are good cars. Compared to the regular models, like a C300, E300/450 or CLS 450, Mercedes puts in a lot more tuning effort into changing how the cars drive, in comparison to BMW's method of just taking a regular model and adding more cylinders and an M### badge.
Like the OP, I like the E63S a lot, however, I do not need a car that powerful, nor do I care for the stiffer suspension set up. I was coming from a totaled 540i which I had found quite boring (despite having every sport option) and checked out an M550i, E450 and E53 for replacements. After test driving the E53 I liked it a lot, and then checked out a CLS 53 which improved the already great handling slightly over the E, and I preferred the styling of the CLS. The M550i simply felt like a heavier 540i with more power, a sterile rocket in a sense. The E450 felt like a typical Mercedes aimed towards the retiree audience, comfortable, quiet, and smooth. However, the 53 series feel a lot different to the regular 450 its based on. It uses the same engine, a 3.0L Turbocharged Inline-6 with a 48-Volt Mild-Hybrid System, then adds an Electric Supercharger, and is a very cool engine setup (more info below). The suspension and chassis feel more rigid and planted without being overly harsh, and steering feels natural (honestly better than a lot of new BMW's)and handling is very neutral in the corners with great body control, it never feels anywhere near as floaty as my 540i. I never saw myself in a Mercedes, hell I've only had BMW's for the last two decades, but they drove me away with the latest 5-series, and the new E and CLS-Class have a great balance of luxury and sport. I've enjoyed my CLS greatly, and it offers everything I had wanted that the 540i and M550i didn't give me. Here's a cool instagram post by automotive journalist Jason Cammisa. He explains the very technical nature and cool abilities of the EQ Boost Merc engines. "A moment of silence, as we mourn the death of turbo lag. Haha fuck that — amen, good riddance, and don't come back. I hate turbo lag! The 3.0-liter M256 straight-six makes 429 hp and 384 lb-ft. But forget everything you know about turbo engines: it responds, sounds, and pulls like a big NA V12. Bonus: same MPG as the 4-cylinder E300 4Matic! Its trick? An electric supercharger called an eBooster. It spins from idle to 70,000 rpm in only 0.25 seconds and generates almost 7 psi of boost. Powered by 48V battery and takes 5000 watts (7 hp!) to spool up... but that boost gives you ~10x that power out the engine. That means you don't need to have a huge, heavy 70-hp electric motor to fill in. (The McLaren P1 used a 177-hp #torquefill motor. Acura NSX used 3: 36, 36, and 47 hp! That is HEAVY.) The M256 also has a small electric motor — 21-hp, 184 lb-ft — and it replaces the flywheel, starter, and alternator. It also provides torque-fill while the eBooster and turbo spool. Once the regular turbo spools up, the eBooster and motor fade out. With so many things to coordinate, this could have been a bucky, surgy disaster. Mercedes knocked it out of the park — this has the best boost control of any engine I've ever experienced. Coming on the throttle or off the throttle (which is just as difficult to manage), it responds like an na engine. And best of all, it's a #straightsix with all the smoothness and sound. Expect to see this tech everywhere. I'd kill for an eBoosted GTI. Best engine I've experienced in a long time. Bravo!" - Jason Cammisa |

I knew you know lol :P
I don't mind it as much? Because even before the re badging thing, Benz shoved the AMG badge on those cars already. Also see plenty of 43, 53s about on the streets but definitely not the full blown AMG cars. My issue with those cars is, Benz (like Porsche) can add a lot of options and blow the MSRP of the cars way higher than necessary. I have seen C43 go for over 80k MSRP before, which made me roll my eyes. Getting a lighty packaged C63/S would be a better option at that point.
