My choice goes to M4, M3 looks simply outdated when near the M4. The front/rear bumper design that some call "ricey" or "uninspiring" - they are pure examples of organic design combined with functionality for aerodynamics and efficiency.

I think this is a bad comparison due to the fact that the m4 is Austin yellow and the m3 is space gray. The Austin Yellow is too attractive so it makes the m4 look better the m3 because of that. But Even with those disadvantages of the m3 the M3 still looks great and in some angles I PREFER the m3 over the m4 specially from driver door to the back of the m4( that part is too long).
A better fair comparison would be a fire orange exterior m3, I bet that one would look better than the m4. |

Ok, I have been criticizing BMW lately and interesting part I m at a dealer right now for oil change and just checked out e92 m3 and 4 series m sport they have side by side here. If I was in the market right now, I would choose 4 series m sport based on looks. Yes, it looks better in flesh than pictures, and level of details is way greater than in e9x cars. I am positive as new m3/4 are released they will be very successful.
P.s. I take my previous critique of f32 back BMW, but don't think you can get away easy with next generation of cars. We need fresh design not evolution please.

but he was also responsible for the E60, E63, and the E65 probably the ugliest BMWs ever made I have no doubt with the 3 series, the board told him to go easy on it, since it's their biggest money maker so they can't afford to take risks with it

The new 3/4 series finally makes sense after seeing the m-sport version and obviously the M versions...
This iteration to me is very much like the E60 5 series... its very awkward and weird without the aggressive bumpers. I hated the standard 5's but the M5 made me understand where the design team was going with it... same with the new 3/4... Do I think its a beautiful design.. not really but I can definitely appreciate what the designers were trying to do. And just like the previous M5 the new M3 and M4 will grow on me but is it a "I must sell my M3 right now so I can pre-order my M3/4"... no.. definitely not. When I saw the M3 in 2008, I knew I had to have it, this car doesn't quite do that to me. Though funny thing is Im actually really in love with the M235i.. styling wise, even though I thought it was a travesty to put an M in front of that car's name. |

Isn't it interesting how that iDrive and the Bangle era designs were so controversial at the time, yet they were incredibly influential and forward thinking? BMW deserves a lot of credit for their boldness and pushing the envelope during that era. I think they have played it a little too safe recently.

Agree, Bangle was way ahead of his time....just took the rest of the world to catch up. Bangle designs were huge influences on car designers globally.
