Seems a worthy read on the batteries:

F8x Battery Cost

I just purchased a new battery for a 2013 E92 - it cost $200 OEM from BMW and I installed it myself. It's a lead acid AGM battery.

In the process I was quoted a F80x battery by mistake. It is a Lithium Ion battery and cost $1500. Is that true???? $1500??

Anyone have to replace a F8x battery yet?

There was another thread around by someone who had to replace it. I also seem to recall there was a 2 week wait to get it shipped in from Germany.

Time to research how long they last and if there are other options. What happens if you drop in a lead acid battery?

It won?t work. Lithium batteries have a completely different charging profile.

You would probably have better luck getting the car to run on kerosene.

You can run your car on a lead acid battery - it requires a re-registration I believe. There is a summary of this discussion in another thread if you choose to search.

The price you quoted is list price at a dealership for the battery. You can get them for a good bit less, but yes it's a very expensive high quality lightweight battery.

Edit: The stock battery is supposed to have a lifetime 2x what a normal battery does as well as all the benefits of a lithium battery. If this bears out as true, bear in mind a "normal" battery replacement on a modern BMW is $500 at a dealership for both the battery & install/registration. So if our lithium battery lasts 2x as well (we'll see), this would reflect a normal spend of $1k at a dealership over that lifespan on a normal battery.

I would anticipate you can get the stock battery for $800 (battery alone).

I guess we have to pay for latest and greatest tech. If battery is better and lighter maybe it's worth it. However, the cost will make many owners think of selling the car before a new battery needed. Likewise don't buy a used one unless battery has been replaced. Owning these cars long term gets more expensive for each successive generation.

Ouch! Suddenly the thought of buying a used '15-'16 M has become less attractive unless you get an amazing deal.

Things you need to factor into a used car purchase:
- $1,500 battery replacement
- $3K-5K extended warranty/maintenance option
- $1K new tires
- etc, etc, etc

Too many M owners nowadays going for cheap replica parts!

Not every OEM part is better than aftermarket, but when in doubt, go OEM

I had mine replaced under warranty in the spring. Cost would have been about $1200. It took almost 8 weeks for the battery to arrive.

Mine was also replaced earlier this year, took just under a week between the diagnosis and the parts arriving.

Well, I have the suspicion that the dealer never ordered the battery. After the diagnosis, I patiently waited for a couple weeks. Then I called the dealer and magically the battery appeared a week later or so.....

Sounds like it. In my case once they deemed the battery was needed I think it was 2 days to give the car back.

Well, thank god for Warranty eh. but usually how long do they last ?

Check with your local dealer on the exact price for a new battery. Perhaps there are other options out there.

I just checked on Leebmann24.de and the price is now 1,300 euros for the Li-on battery. BMW part number: 61218047221

https://www.leebmann24.de/lithium-io...218047221.html

As with all new(er) BMW's built since 2007... you MUST code the battery to the car AND register it in the car's ECU.

IF your battery is on it's way out... perhaps using a CTEK trickle charger to recondition your battery might save it. It's worth the $80 for one. Your dealer sells them as well as on Ebay, etc.

Have some new information regarding the battery if anybody is interested.

Car had around 14K miles.
Dealer told me the avg. driven is around 5 miles per day which caused the battery to die.
They were ready to charge $2800 but the dealer couldn't believe this issue also so they replaced it under 'good will'.

This lead me to ultimately want to sell my car which I was in the process of until COVID19 hit.

Car looks good and all but it's definitely not worth it for my lifestyle as I cannot average more driving than I'm already driving now.
