HUD Retrofit

Just curious has anyone added the HUD to an non-HUD car? Am sure parts can be ordered and car fitted with it. Question is has anyone done it? Cost? Ease of DIY? Anyone???

The cost of retrofitting the original one would probably be prohibitive, as you would need to swap the dash and windshield too.

This one might be a better option:

Not a fan of the wires and post production look of this install. Would rather have it as a separate option versus the package it now is in. This is an option say if you didn't have NAV or Idrive maybe but not as it currently is. Having had an F10 with integrated HUD and an F12 with it also it is the one thing I do miss in my M3

With my corvette when I had to replace the windshield, I replaced it with a standard windshield and could not really tell the difference in the HUD. It still reflected well. This maybe the case with BMW as well. I would be interested in knowing what parts are really needed in doing this and maybe finding a totaled F30 to buy the parts. It may not be as bad as some think, at least I hope not.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but...

They say you don't know what you're missing if you've never had it. Three weeks ago we picked up an X5 with the HUD. I've driven the X5 about 400 miles now and got into my M4 last night for the first time in a hot second. First thing I noticed was the absence of the HUD!! OMG first world problems!

So here I am researching retrofitting HUD in my M4. WTF.

you might as well trade it in and get one with a hud.

I think you'd have to change the dash unless there is a blanking plate there u could remove

Similar experience here, I got a loaner with HUD and oh my! what an idiot for not checking the Executive package box for my M . It appears HUD is only available in BMWs? I am hard pressed to find another brand that offers it? surprised the technology has not taken off, really cool.

To be honest HUD retrofit is quite easy in F82.
Don't need to buy new windshield - works fine on the one without HUD.
You can cut the dashboard and fit it. Cluster in 90% cases has connector for HUD.
Only coding and some wiring is required which are not hard.
You need wiring harness and HUD. Wiring could be from different car - no need to buy from F8x.

Maybe that will help you guys.

Does the dash need to be removed? Or is it possible to mount HUD unit by cutting outside? Thanks.

It's better to remove the dash.

Absolutely the case. I learned my lessons years ago by buying a stripper and later tried to retrofit a bunch of things which I. The end just made the car not that fun to drive anymore. Nowadays I only buy cars completely fully loaded because buyer's remorse is very very expensive.
