BMW dealer messed up my wheels advice needed

Hey brothers and sisters… so I bought out my lease and began modding my car finally. In the process of buying my lease they sold me on that “service plan” that includes tires and wheel warranties. I thought cool pricey but I guess it’s worth the peace of mind. Anyhow I got some curb rash on my 2 right rims so I bring it in for repair. The wheel repair guy took a week to return the car and the rims aren’t even the same color anymore. I had the original 666M 20” Shadow black I believe is the color. These were more of a matte black than anything. That’s not the worst part. They painted all 4 of my rims and there’s new scratches that weren’t there before! To top it off I had new scratched on my front bumper.

Few days later I finally met with the GSM and he said he would repair it using “powder coating” with some really good wheel specialist “wheel doctor” down here in Miami. I’m worried my rims are compromised at this point but he assured me they’re not and there’s no need to replace it. He did mention he’s going to fix all my damages which is cool but jeez what a nightmare.

Has anyone used powdered coating for the rims or heard of anyone doing this? Is the longevity there? I’m worried that now my rims got touched and painted and they’ll never be the same as in defects in the future. Luckily I have the warranty but still. I kind of like the matte black color on the rims maybe I’ll stick with that. Any suggestions?

Yes powder coating rims is something that can be done and not something to worry about at all. If they are going to pay to have them PC'd then do it, otherwise have them buy you a new set of OEM 666s instead.

I would put my foot down and ask for replacement for the wheels or have it re-finished by someone of your choosing. You paid to get your rims back to original spec, not a new color.

For the bumper scratch, go back to your walk around. Tell them it wasn't there before and if it's there now, that means it was caused on their terms. Hopefully you brought this up/caught this before driving off/away.

Ever since I had a 2002 E46 M3 on 19s I've never seen a re furbed alloy even when diamond cut look the same as factory.

They just don't have that same polished finish

To be fair mine were re done before the previous owner bought it and they are a very good finish but you can still tell

The only upside is I think they are slightly more smoked than Oem which I've grown to love.

I think you should insist on new set even just make up for all the hassle.

Powder coating is fine. But where are the scratches? If it's the machine they're using to mount the tires on with then you'll most likely to have scratches on the newly powder coated wheels. Do you have some pictures you can share of the damage?

You're also missing the M sticker on some of your wheels.

Lol! I was going to put that in the post but I thought I'd see if an eagle eye spots it!

I've been meaning to order some but lost Brexit tax and import duty mean a crazy price in Ireland.

Only reason why I knew to look for it was because I had a previous wheel repaired and it was missing the M sticker after I got it back!

Absolutely with before and after photos they’re going to repair it with their body shop hopefully it’s done right. I asked for new wheels and the service manager said the wheels aren’t compromised and that the issues with the wheels are cosmetic and can be fixed. Wheels doctor I’ve heard from several
People are the best around so they should be able to refinish it correctly. Fingers crossed.

They don’t look bad if it wasn’t for the scratches and the stuff around the rims. The people that are going to powder coat it I’ve heard are the best around so it should come out nice. I mean if it doesn’t I can always ask for a replacement but for now I figured let’s give it a shot. Yeah I’m not happy but what can I do 🤷🏻*♂️ Here are some pics of the rims after the bad repair and coloring. Wasn’t sure how to embed the pics on here like you did.

Yeah I posted the pics just now. Not sure if you can see them but there’s 2 in particular that have noticeable scratching around the emblem.

If you zoom In on image 1 to the left of the B in the emblem you can see the scratches.

Of course he's going to say it's cosmetic only. He doesn't want to shell out $1k each on wheels vs paying maybe $100 on repair. I had something similar happen at a dealer where they scratched my 666M wheels. They repaired it once and it wasn't perfect so I insisted on new ones. When the service manager refused, I contacted the owner of the dealer group and magically the service manager changed his mind one day later.

if you have the tires and wheel warranties then just tell them to make a claim for a new wheel... if they refuse u can just go hit a big pole hole and bent/crack or hit a side curb and damage the wheel then file a claim for a new wheel

Maybe you can take advantage of this and get them powder coated a color and finish that you like. Maybe something that will hide the brake dust.

Looks matte black lol. Looks nothing like shadow lines. Looks cheap and weird.

I'd be super mad.

File a complaint to the general manager and demand brand new set of shadowlines because it's no longer original and also looks like paint out of a gun sprayed over original finish. I'm sure it will start fading or chipping or cracking under a year.

You waited a week with no car to only end up in disappointment. You will most likely wait another week to get powder coated and so on.

even if you ask for a replacement, they will source a really good refinished wheel and give you a bullshit invoice. just the cost of letting someone drive your car.

It bothers me that OP has tire and wheel warranty. But they refinished all 4 wheels in different color.

It's basically like you going in for a flat tire with PS4S and then walking out with 4 used hankooks with scratches and scuffs.

yeah typical small mind bullshit. which is the mentality at dealerships. no accountability.

they obviulsy did all 4 to milk the warranty which is the elephant in the room, and if questioned they will retaliate with anger and aloofness.

Op wheels can be refnished, this smoke black which also featured on the 437m IS IMPOSSIBLE to match, but any wheels shop can get is 95% there. you on the other end got a shit job.

On top of that, they took OP car on a joyride and scratched the front bumper and whatnot.

its hard to say what exactly is the situation, without pics.

front bumper scratches usually not draping the front bumper and doing work on a car. nonetheless. sloppy work.

Yeah you guys are spot on… I insisted on new wheels and service manager told me that we can try to powder coat it and make it “right”. But check this out! I noticed one of the bolts missing on my front left tire and a couple other ones that were hand tightened! Completely unsafe. Luckily I knew someone nearby who was able to tighten the wheels in the meantime. When we removed the wheels one of the front shocks was badly scratched and has a dent apparently it seems someone tried mounting the back wheel to the front. I wanted to talk to this wheel repair person and ask them how in the world can they be this bad. I’m just disappointed because I have to leave my car with them for atleast another week and I have 0 compensation to show for all this inconvenience. I spent all week long back and forth with service advisor barely returning any of my calls and messages waiting on a loaner. Now it’s Friday and they want me to bring it in. When I asked if they would work on it today and the weekend they said they would get to it Monday. Why would I let me car sit in that dealer over the weekend? Hell no.

Needless to say after this is all said and done I will never go to this dealership again.

I’m really wanting to press them for new wheels but they guaranteed me they can get it to look correctly.

What finish would you guys recommend? Gloss black? I liked my shadow black but I’m open to new ideas.
