Painted my 666M wheels gold and I've never been happier

Took a shot at painting my 666M wheels gold and they came out beautifully. I wasn't a huge of how the wheels looked when silver.

Wow! Wasn’t able to picture that in my head, but the gold really pops against the black. Nice work! What process did you go through?

I couldn't picture it either and it still looked a little off when I tried to Photoshop it. Just took a leap of faith and it came out better than I expected going into it.

The process was as follows:

1. Taped up the valve stem and the little m logo
2. Sanded down the wheel face and barrel with 200 grit sand paper to work out imperfections
3. Sanded wheel with 2000 grit to smooth out the surface
4. Wiped wheel down with wheel cleaner
5. Rinsed off wheel wit dish soap and water
6. Applied tire shine to the tires (prevents overspray from sticking)
7. Placed note cards between the lip and tire
8. Sprayed paint in light layers (didn't bother with primer or clear because it made the finish a little weird the first time I painted wheels and the finish holds well even with mounting new tires.
9. Let wheels dry
10. Mount to car

Crazy that you did this yourself. I was waiting for you to say “so and so shop” did the work. Great to see the DIY work and based on photos, looks really clean!!!

Looks nice. I did the same thing to another car and it held up okay. Its mostly prep work so the paint sticks.Mine chipped a bit next time I had tires mounted.

I've been thinking of getting mine powder coated, but TBH with how much a used set goes for I might be better off selling them and getting a set in the color I want. I could get wider wheels too at the same time.

Been DIYing everything so far on this haha. Only thing I didn't do myself is the crank hub... Don't trust myself with timing yet 🤣. Even started getting familiar with e-sys and ista!

Thumbs up

It looks very good and kudos to you for having the patience to actually sand down 4 666Ms. I hope you used some kind of high temperature paint. I know a friend who had his wheels painted and after he went to the track, they became "unpainted" in many spots. I am not sure if this was due to bad prep or what.

Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold and 2k clear. Haven used high heat paint for wheels ever and have never had an issue. Next step is getting low dust pads 🤣
