Interesting. I have heard both but forever it has always been that you needed coding going from iron to CC.

The coding basically consists of deactivating the emergency braking mode and in case of track use, deactivating fading as well.

When you want to brake quickly, the car thinks it is an emergency brake and applies more braking force, with ceramic discs and stock booster this becomes very sensitive, this function is deactivated and everything works normally.

How is the computer system actually doing this? It doesn’t appear that the vacuum line to the booster has any electronically controlled valve, so how can the computer regulate pedal assistance? Is there a pressure boost coming from the ABS module?

Yes, i think it's the abs module.

I have just had a full CCB retrofit carried out by BMW, and I’m also feeling that the pedal is slightly spongy at the top of its travel.

I’ve had CCB’s before on an M4CS and can’t remember that feeling. Do you think I should ask them to bleed it up again??

Yes, took it back and they bled the brakes again. Said there was a small amount of air in it.

I don’t think it’s quite as per my factory CCB’s but I’m reasonably happy with the pedal now

I wonder if they did a standard bleed or a full ABS bleed.

The CCM type disks including PCCBS have carbon in the surface that contact the pads. In the case of CCM there is no friction layer. In the case of PCCBS there is a friction layer that contains carbon.

There is no inherit problem with carbon at the friction/non-friction layer type disks from the braking quality. However, the disadvantage is the fact that carbon oxidizes at 420deg Celsius. So it is not ideal for track days, agrssive driving, or driving where the traction control constantly keeping the car on the road.

The current BMW option is CCBH. Or Carbon Ceramic Brakes with Hard friction layer. That layer is made of silicon carbide, does not contain carbon, and last many many trackday events.

My site RebrakeUSA explains the process. The CCM, CCBS and Surface Transforms and other type can all be refurbished with silicon carbide friction layer.
