Just bend the shield next time instead of wasting your time at the dealer

Yep, just tweaking back the shields a bit has fixed my problem, for months now, although my dealer did it for me, as well as removed quite a bit of debris outta there.

The moment this happened to me, I was at a local shops parking place, and they fixed it straight away, but dear coffee I have never been so horrified in my life. There is no sound like it. The three feet I moved the car while it was making it were the most painful ones in my life. I truly hope you don't have to hear it ever but if you do,, know its okay to cry. Most of us probably had some fluids coming out from some end because of it.

Hopefully everyone from this board calls their SA just to make sure this is documented and a well known problem. it might make BMW act a little faster.

Attached is the summary with information report # in case anyone wants to reference it to their SA. The SA and foreman were gone when I picked the car up tonight, so I'll follow up with them tomorrow...

This really sounds like a great business opportunity. EAS? IND? Can anyone make a better mouse (pebble) trap? Make these out of CF in a way that won't trap rocks, and I think there will a bunch of folks who will purchase it. Just a thought.

OMG
110 miles so far on mine and I go to turn around in my neighborhood cul-de-sac and onlookers cringed as a screaming noise erupted from the rear of my car. WTF I thought and then remembered the thread on here. I immediately stopped, backed up a few feet, put it in D and scooted out of there w no noise. That shield must act as an amplifier when that pebble is scraping across it because that shit is LOuD!

The issue with this car was actually a little more complex. Volvo used a very long center resonator on the exhaust...it was about 30" long. And as such, there were no exhaust supports for a considerable distance. That resonator was in fairly close proximity to the rear driveshaft. Well, physics being what they were, when the exhaust got up to temperature, it naturally expanded. Volvo took this into account with their design, and left room. What they did not account for was DIFFERENTIAL expansion. See, when you ran through enough rain, the bottom of the resonator would cool, and contract, while the top would not. This caused the resonator to bend like a banana, and arc up, with the end of the resonator making contact with the driveshaft! This not only scored a ring in the driveshaft, but it made a ringing noise that sounded like running your finger over the rim of a wineglass. Only louder.... Guys on the Volvo forum called it a squeal. I had not experienced it, but than god I knew about it, because the first time it happened, HOLY CHEESE AND RICE WHAT THE MOTHERF@CK WAS THAT!?!? It sounded like a WWII air raid siren going off in the passenger's footwell. I had kind of scoffed at it before, but now that I had heard it, I was just glad I didn't crash! The below video is a great shot of how loud it is. Ignore this tool talking. And oh, God, I still love those gauges.... |

Yep... you can push the shield back and the rocks fall out. This has been an issue since the E92 generation (my E92 had this occur several times and the same fix... push back the shields)... so I doubt BMW will fix it

Weird scraping noise?
Hey All,
Not sure if you've heard or seen someone with a similar issue but I'm at 5k miles on my M4 and I'm hearing some odd things. I'm getting my car back from the dealer on Saturday (after being there for 2 weeks ) Dealer says no mechanical problems at all. First sound is very intermittent. The conditions under when it happens seem to be completely random. Sometimes it will happen after a few minutes of driving, sometimes after hours. The only constant is that I've only heard it at low speeds (sub 30mph). The best way to describe this is a scraping noise coming from underneath the car... almost like someone is scraping a piece of metal against the concrete. I've pulled over numerous times when I hear this and there isn't anything that I could find that is caught or scraping underneath or around the car. I've pulled off my wheels to make sure that nothing is scraping against the rotors with no success. The second sound seems like it is coming from underneath the hood, above the passenger side tire area. It almost sounds like a "woosh" that gets faster as you open the throttle. This happens while revving the engine or if the car is in motion. I test drove another brand-new M4 before I left my car with the dealer a few weeks back and the new M4 I checked out did not have those same noises. It would be too hard for me to try to replicate the 1st issue since it seems random so I'm at a loss. The first issue freaks people out when I'm driving and then it sounds like I'm scraping my car against something for 3ish seconds |

I had a weird noise that I could not identify. After i refused to take my car back from service they ended up replacing something along the lines of the "emergency brake line" or something like that. Cannot remember as this was a few months ago. Take your car in and tell them to check it out.

There are quite a few threads on here describing a scraping noise that might be your issue. IIRC, it is to do with stones getting behind the heat shield of the rotors and can be readily rectified.
As for the whoosh, are you sure this is just not turbo spool?
