"Shift point indicator" in HUD, what does it do?

The outer dial in on the HUD is said to be a "shift point indicator". What does it suppose to do?

In my case it is just a bunch of empty rectangles. It doesn't show anything, no matter what gear Im in or what speed Im driving.
(my car has a 6MT).

It fills up as you get close the redline to tell you when to shift. Just like on race cars.

That means you're not driving it as you should, go get another car .

Joke aside, if you're still on break-in and not exceeding 5500RPM as recommended, it is normal. The shift lights will only show on hard acceleration when nearing redline.

So today I gave it a try, I pulled second gear up to 6500 RPM, and nothing. No indication of anything. So I RTFM, and my car doesn't do what it says. The HUD dial stays blank, and the tachometer dial just shows one yellow bar and 2 red bars, and it never changes.
Is there a setting I need to set in order for those to work?

I don't know at exactly which point the shift lights start to come in but try taking it all the way to redline and not stopping at 6.5k. If you have the M display in the HUD you should see it in the rectangles over the tach. If you have the regular display in the HUD then you will see the lights appear right above the analog tachometer in the gauges.

Were you on full throttle? I don't think they work if you're driving "normally" - you have to be foot flat.

6500rpm probably isn’t enough. It is also dependent on acceleration rate.

Go WOT to redline, you’ll see the shift lights.

Yeah I had mine come on for the first time recently (I’m still in break in). I was at a busy intersection and had to floor it after turning through,, and saw them light up. I thought it was a function turned on after the break in service, but I guess it makes sense that I never saw it until now because I’ve been keeping the RPMs low and driving conservatively.

Well first... when you start your car do the yellow and redline indicators physically on the dash light up, and are they below actual redline?

First check that.

Then common sense, make sure that you have the M display on. Drive the car for 5-10 minutes until the oil temp increases.

Go to someplace that has a 45/55mph limit where it's straight, maybe a light where you can go from a stop.

Be in sport or sport + throttle settings

1st gear is relatively short, so feel free to squeeze the throttle to like 50% and shift first at like 4500 RPM.

Shift at 4500, and you should now be in second gear, with throttle at 50%. Squeeze the throttle more from 50% to like 90%, (don't have to be kickdown). As you get above 5500RPM, you should see the indicator squares showing up on your HUD.

Alternatively just set yourself up for launch control and you'll see it for sure.

As CanAutM3 and JSTDR1V have suggested, I think acceleration seems to be a key part of the recipe for getting this to work. I've tried taking it gently to the redline and not triggered the lights at all. But have routinely trigged the light sequence ~6.5k (or even a little lower) when really on the throttle. The more I'm thinking about it, smoothness of acceleration may be a factor too, but that could just be in my head. Either way, it definitely doesn't appear to be solely linked to hitting a specific RPM.

Just be warned...once you figure out how to trigger it, you want to do it more and more. Like crack. But shift lights.
