Tell your teens to stop Texting and Driving! - Got rearended

Sitting in some slow moving traffic minding my own business in my new 3 week old M4 and then BOOOOOM!!! I get rear ended by an 18 year old in a Zip Car Ford Focus. No brakes on her part because she was feverishly texting on her phone. I know this because amazingly enough a state trooper was sitting on the shoulder right where it happened and saw the whole thing. FUCK!! Not even 300 miles on the clock. Thank god I wasn't on my motorcycle. I'd be paralyzed or dead.

That really sux.

Unfortunately this habit is here to stay. I see it everywhere, every day.It is a joke when I see those signs on the highway that say "it can wait, text stop 5 miles ahead".

Get it fixed by BMW and it will be good as new.

Very sorry to see that!

Hopefully you were able to go off on her in a major way to the point she was crying. When my kids get old enough to drive I would thank someone for doing that if they were hit by one of them.

Horrible news, and something I fear for nearly every day. Glad damage is minimal.

Teens are the guiltiest party, but I see jackasses all day texting and they come in all shapes, sizes, colors & age. It's an epidemic.

Get your children a manual/stick shift car and see if they can text and drive.

s4awd - glad you didn't suffer any injuries and the car will be quickly repaired as good as new; overall, it looks fairly minor - good thing the teen was in Ford Focus. Most drivers just don't feel a need to keep their head on a swivel and drive defensively - they devote their attention to texting or watching videos.

That's easy to do when you're just cruising. What they need to do is set up cameras for catching people doing things they shouldn't be when driving - not just texting. Makeup, readying a paper, etc. Make it an excessive fine with points on the record.

fines are not nearly steep enough. Should be treated like drunk driving. Truth is I can drive better drunk then I can with my eyes off the road texting.

How does insurance work given she was in a zip car? Any concerns there?

I can understand anyone being upset about property damage. But if I saw someone verbally assaulting an 18 year old who made a mistake, regardless of how stupid it may have been, I would put a stop to it. Most adults would. That's not the solution, it's an emotional reaction.

To the OP, sorry this happened. I fear the same everyday from the abundance of drivers that can't seem to use common sense. I had an 18 year old girl throw her car into reverse on an on ramp while I was stopped behind her. I laid on the horn thinking she would react, but she was oblivious. I suspect she was on the phone, but no proof. Later in the day I had 5 missed calls and voicemails from her father and brother. Answered the next call from her father. He wanted to interrogate me about who she was with. Their behavior pissed me off more than the accident itself.

Anyway, it's relatively minor and hopefully it can be fixed quickly and you can put it behind you.

Its NOT just the teens... Its F*****g everyone! Just take a look around next time you are stopped at a traffic light. (...you may have to put YOUR phone down to do this)

Apparently some folks must not even be able to start their car if they don't have their phone in their hand...

"I Text/Call/Surf/App with my phone therefore I am" in cars, walking down the sidewalk, in restaurants, first thing in the morning, last thing at night. If they aint texting/talking/surfing they simply don't exist...

Folks simply don't know how to just be in the moment anymore...

This is the absolute truth! People like to place blame on teens for texting while driving, but it is EVERYONE!

IMO technology and legislation will eventually put a stop to this epidemic. At some point phones will not work while a car is moving.

just this week while picking up dinner driving along a busy street. A guy decides it's OK to swerve between lanes while looking at pictures on facebook.

I looked at him while stopping at a light for a good 10-15 seconds. He didn't even bother looking away from the phone.

I'm scared every time I have my newborn in the car when people like him are around

That's a nice thought, but in reality, you can't really block a phone from working just because its in a moving car. Passengers all have a legitimate right to use their phones...

You forgot "speeding." So maybe we'll scrap the cameras idea...

I agree I see more adults doing it than teenagers. I have to play friggen Frogger on the way to work with the number of cars that just slowly drift over into my lane. I don't understand what is so important to text over.

Nothing is that important!! It is just the instant gratification mentality that has emerged today.
