I never thought I would say this, but I kind of miss hydraulic steering

why do I feel this way?

Also, what's the best mode sport or comfort?

According to Clarkson, comfort:

Comfort for both street and track. Sport feels artificial.

I switch it to Sport+ as soon as the engine is fired up..I hate when the steering wheel is too easy to turn.

I think Comfort for steering has more natural feeling for our car.

I also found that when I switch to sport/ sport + in engine setting.

The comfort setting steering will become heavier than engine is in efficiency mode.

Uhhh many people miss hydraulic steering and the numbness that comes with a lot of electric systems has been noted in virtually every automotive publication.

There is no "best" steering setting, only what feels best to you. I prefer comfort because it seems to be the most natural. While the comfort setting provides a lighter feel than past bmws with hydraulic steering, I find the resistance of sport/sport+ to feel artificial like an imaginary force is pushing against the wheel as I turn it.

I prefer sport. I'll turn it to sport+ if I'm hauling ass on a bumpy road to prevent the bump from making me accidentally turn the steering wheel

Hydrolic steering and stiff suspension are what made a BMW a BMW. Go drive a low end E46 325i and see. It is very upsetting that the only way to come close to a traditional BMW is to buy an ///M these days. If I wanted a MB or Lexus, I would buy one.

maybe this new addition to the garage is why I miss the hydraulic steering.

it's funny that people say electric steering feels artificial- a whole car is an artificial object. Electric steering feels different to traditional steering.

our BMW 125i feels a lot like comfort. the Porsche Macan is in between comfort and sport - feels 'natural' oops, I said it...

Over the past year I have owned an Alfa 4C, F430, Lotus Evora 400, and a AMG GTS, all three have do not have electronic (I also own a one of a kind 911 without it) steering and it is unfortunate so many car companies have taken away the best part of driving.

Agree!
Used to have an E90 325i base version which was significantly more sportier & fun to drive than a F30 328i loaner that I drove last year.
I feel that BMW with F30 generation is trying to focus on non enthusiast buyers who like BMW badge but prefer comfort over sport, this way they could sell more cars to more people.
The problem, however, is that an M car starts basically as a regular series car which is then tweaked by the M division.

I consider myself a car guy. I work on cars and I track them.
I went from a hydraulic steering track car to electric in my M. Electric feels better and is more predictable.

...here it comes:

I prefer electric steering over hydraulic.

I hope I don't get banned

I think I'm even worse, I don't have an opinion either way except for the way a cars steering "feels" has a lot more to do with than just if it has an electric or a hydraulic rack.

I can't remember what magazine did a test or how they did it, but most either didn't feel a difference or preffered the electric rack was the jist of it.

I'm also surprised that we are getting new steering and sound threads. Two subjects that have beaten to death and raised from the dead just to beat them to death again more times than most of us can count.

Miss hydraulic steering as far a feeling every road pebble and imperfection. I don’t miss the ps leaks and static rack speed so to speak. I Like the f80 variable rack speed. On center feel improves with GTS coding. The f80 has a pretty fast rack. I like being able to steer & counter without having a ps motor is lagging behind.. worth the trade offs. I mostly use comfort in the f80. Bmw M racks will only get better.

I agree - I was an initial defender of electric steering, feeling (sic) that all the people complaining were either old fashioned or just didn't like change.

However, after driving the E93 and the F83 back to back and now in the 911, I do understand why the complaints.

I think the complaints are more around the overly 'artificial' heavy Sport & Sport+ modes that makes the car feel in some way less dynamic.
