Do you know what oil was used previously? This will help you determine what weight (e.g. 0w-30/40 or 5w-30/40) is in the car.
Unless you are doing a complete oil change it would be good to find this out to avoid mixing viscosity when topping up. I personally use Motul X-cess 8100 gen 2 (5w-40) which is BMW LL-01 approved. The S55 in the F8x can use 0w-30/40 or 5w-30/40. There's a really good oil thread you can go through to help you determine what will work for your use case which is found here: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1764629 |

Do not trust anything that is put down on paper as to what services were done to your car prior to your purchase, unless you've seen it with your own eyes. "Trust but verify" And when you checked the oil, it is blackest as black can be.
And they stated the oil was changed. I purchased my 2017 M3 ZCP back in February, yes they said services were done. But I immediately got the car in the shop, and change out every fluid in the vehicle, even changed brake pads, brake lines, belts, spark plugs and filters for my own peace of mind and maintenance tracking purposes. Now, I know everything that was done to the car, as I've performed it and documented it.

I cahnge the oil every six months regardless of mileage, and I only drive my car 7,000 per year. Everything else I do by the book except spark plugs. It's a waste of money and time to them every 20k miles.

I also change my oil every 6 months, regardless of mileage.

It's all personal preference, I just choose to change mine every 6 months. Some may view this as overkill, but I've been doing this so long on all my vehicles, so why stop now. Something funny, since my last oil change, I've only put 1000 miles on my E63 AMG.

When I received the car, we inspected it from front to back, and looked at everything, if it needed changing it was addressed, but we only found a few items since the car only had 10,237 miles for a 7 yrs. old car. So, new tires, spark plugs, trans oil, diff oil, brake fluid, engine coolant, intercooler fluid, etc. were all changed. Yesterday, I just picked the car up after work, after having a paint correction, removing old PPF and installing new PPF and ceramic coating were done. Now the car is fully dialed in. I need to take new pictures of it in the sun.

Same here. M4 manual that I’ll service every 5k miles. Apparently I also have to change the transmission fluid at the same time.
After reading this thread, I see how much more detailed getting “service” done needs to be on my new-to-me F82. Owning a performance car means serious maintenance. Last edited by JTgotham; 10-04-2024 at 05:04 PM.. Reason: Additional thought to add. |

The key is that you have to develop a maintenance plan/schedule when services are needed and completed. I have a spreadsheet on all my cars to track this very thing. I change my fluids by time and not by mileage, as I rarely reach those mileage thresholds:
Oil - 6 months Air Filter/Cabin Filter - 1 yr. Wiper Blades - 1 yr. Brake Fluid - 2 yrs. Power Steering - 2 yrs. Engine Coolant - 4 yrs. Intercooler Coolant - 4 yrs. Transmission - 4 yrs. Differential - 4 yrs. Serpentine Belt - 5 yrs. Spark Plugs - 7 yrs. Following my own schedule, has worked out great for me. As my maintenance is spread out over years, and much easier on the wallet. Especially when you have three performance vehicles.

I have three cars, so the M3 doesn't get a ton of miles placed on it. So 6-7 yrs works for me. Besides when I bought this car, it still had the factory plugs in it, and although there wasn't anything wrong with them.
I changed them anyway because, I heard that sometimes these old plugs can have a tendency to get stuck in the head. Oh, and the car only has 14,XXX miles thus far, so waiting until 30,000 miles or three years will take me a few year to reach. A funny story, I took my E63 AMG into my shop to change out the spark plugs, and after my mechanic removed a few, and stated that these plugs look brand new. And that I'm either not driving the car enough or not running her hard enough, and to stop using so much LM Jectron fuel injector cleaner, as the tip of the plugs were white. But that car has the same injectors from factory, and now has 110,XXX miles on it, without any issues or misfires. Go figure.....

Maintenance
I agree that fluids and belt should be time-based maintenance, but AFAIK spark plugs do not degrade only by mileage?

Understood.... But I've only had the car for 8 months. I'm going by the maintenance schedule, that I established for my E63 AMG and F85 X5M. I might need to change things up for the M3, from what others are stating.

oil change- every 5k miles or yearly. Which ever comes 1st. In the little over 3 years i've had my m3 its usually yearly as this is not my daily. But yearly would be good.

Most of the time it’s due to time since they are still being used if the car is just idling. This is why it’s recommend to be replaced every 3rd oil change and by time that’s every 3 years at a minimum. They can also get stuck in the engine if they aren’t replaced frequently.
