Did this to my F80 a couple of months ago and finally got the roof bars for Christmas! Very happy that I can now throw my mtn bike up on the M in the spring! Thanks so much for the DIY instructions. Super easy to do, you just need patience and good tools. Some experience milling into composites is a big ++!!

New to the forum- bought a '16 F80 in Alpine White in Sept with CF roof and this has been my first mod(came with the Carbon rear lip, diffuser and front lip). This post was spot on and helped me get my roof rack and bike racks installed! After spending an embarrassing amount of time trying to embed the photos (... ), the photos are attachments below. Will say that the original post is perfect at laying things out step by step.
The point here and what was helpful for me to see was that other people were having success with it and I can confirm. Took less than an hour to complete, then a day to let materials settle before installing racks. Something that made it a lot easier to access was removing the roof rail moldings. Its as simple as pulling straight up in one of the access points. Read that the front and rear points can come loose or not sit flush needing 3M tape to keep them down but I haven't experienced any issues since putting back on. The nuts were exactly where this post said they were. Measured and marked with a silver sharpie to see on CF. Used a small drill bit as a pilot and then used a forstner drill bit to access the screw. Would recommend that over a wood drill bit but I think both will do the job. Was surprised how thick the CF actually was but going slow with the drill, it was relatively simple. The OEM Star Screw (part number 07 14 7 153 767) recommenced here worked, filled the hole with the Silkaflex and inserted/tighten in the screw. The material I got only came in a grey so I used a gloss black auto paint so it'd blend in better with the CF. Then let everything set for 24 hours before clipping back in the roof rail moldings and adding the racks. Added a photo just the Thule Aero roof rack and a few photos of the Kuat Trio bike racks along with my two MTB's (Evil Calling and Transition PBJ). Love the set up and the way it turned out overall. I ride 2-3x per week so it makes it convenient to go. Would highly recommend the Kuat Trio racks for ease of use and they come with a built in cable lock that comes out of the back and locks around rear triangle and wheel. Can definitely hear the racks up there and will most be taking on and off when not riding often or hitting up some track days next year. Anyways, hope this helps someone make the decision that its worth doing! (Now on to some performance mods....) Cheers! |

It just occurred to me that @MarksM has an M4. And the measurements are from that model. I have an M3 so that likely explains the discrepancies in measurements

Been over 5 months now, no issues at all. Continued use of putting bikes up on the racks 2-3x weekly with spirited runs out to the trails, all good . No leaks with heavy amounts of rain earlier this year. Taking time and making sure the epoxy is on there good seems to be the ticket.

Did this today on my F80 M3 sedan. Was super easy.
I eyeballed all four locations and hit the center of the torx screw/plug every time. Don't spend too much time measuring. For the larger hole, I used a 3/4" diamond-edge hole saw. It was a little tricky to get started because the one I got had no pilot, but it bored a very clean hole in the carbon fiber. Thanks to all who posted previously--the photos and comments were a big help! |

Did this mod today - worked fantastic.
A few pointers that worked well: - I measured where to drill prior to pulling off the trim pieces. I flipped up the flaps - measured and marked to dead center of that, both length and width, and marked it. Then removed the trim and drilled. I hit dead center on all 4 corners. - I think a 3/4" hole may work a hair better. As long as you properly fill with sealant once the new bolt is installed, you should be good to go. - also, before installing the bolts, I used fine grit sandpaper to knock down any rough or sharp edges on the carbon. Then I installed and sealed. - I used Permatex black silicone. I did NOT use the Permatex gasket sealer another thread suggested. The standard Permatex black silicone should be more than adequate. - once dried, I'll go back and hit any exposed lightly sanded carbon with some flat black acrylic latex paint just to safeguard and for piece of mind. Great mod - and great write up Maltman Can't wait to get my bike and boards up there! |
