Closing the Hood

Alright guys help me out here.

Hood pops with two pulls from the interior handle. People love to see the carbon weave underneath.

However I feel like I'm gonna damage the hood when it put it down as it flexes trying to get it latched.

Am I missing something here or it this just how it is?

Doesn't seem to be enough weight close like a normal hood. Just don't want to hurt anything.

Seems to prefer being closed firmly from about half height. Kind of slams but seems to work.

The Service manager suggested the following: lower it by hand to resting point, use one hand to push down from the center while other hand pushes down over one side's latch at the same time, then repeat for the other latch, again with one hand in center. It worked though had to get the pressure right.

That's a big "NO" according to the engineers at the M division. Never push on the hood as you run the risk of cracking the carbon fiber.

All the delivery specialists at the BMW Welt all got training from the M divison regarding the GTS. The proper way is to slam it down like you don't give a shit. They said never ever push on the hood to close it for the reason I mentioned.

M4_gts is right....

Walter Haupt the lead engineer gave another member and I an actual lesson in the basement carpark of the Fairmont Monaco, which I get is just a surreal statement.

He basically said, think of it as a wet towel, that you are holding a piece in each hand and you are going to snap it down rapidly...like a whip.....

and he evenly used two hands and whipped it down...he also said if only one side catches and you didn't get the whole thing down...start again...do not press on the other side to put it down.....open it back up and do it again...with some guts.

You snap it down just over halfway point when you can feel the gas struts becomes soft. Just go with the flow took me about half a dozen time practicing to get it right

This worked perfectly.

Now I don't look like an idiot when people ask to pop the hood.

The carbon hood doesn't have the same weight as the standard hood so it's impossible to use the 'slam' method.

We pull ours down until it's resting on the latches, and using the palms of both hands, gently press the hood over the area where the latches are. You'll have to do this twice, once for each side.

We were told by the engineer at BMW M not to do this. We were also told by the delivery specialists at the welt not to do this as well.

Proper technique is to Slam it

bring it to half height and slam it.

Source: BMW Trainers
(They said multiple times that it WILL crack if you do not do it right.)

yes. slam it by placing your fingers spread near the very front of the hood about shoulder length apart. it took me a few tries to perfect it but it works best and avoid the risk of damaging the carbon.
