Warm up / Start up time?

I just can't imagine starting my car and sitting there for minutes on end for no reason. I got places to go lol

It's my first bmw as wanted to make sure from all the rod failure due to oil not lubricating when startup and go. Better to be safe than sorry. I don't need To Break My Wallet if possible.

So I've been doing this wrong all along? I always let cars warm up, when I need to go right away I let it do it's terrible belching (Cold start/ MPE) for a second and keep the RPMs low until it warms up, no boost, it's a horrible sounding car but I love everything else about it

Yeah, idling for that long at start up is bad for any engine, at least what was told to me as a youth.

Only time to take bout 2-3 mins is if it's brutally cold outside.

I would say, like most others, let the idle drop down from the initial cold start and be on your way.

You are either thinking about the previous generation M3 or have received some incorrect information. I dont think there has been a single instance reported of rod bearing failure on the s55 engine.

And even for the prior gen cars, it was still best to start and drive off immediately (keeping revs and throttle inputs benign of course) rather than simply letting it idle.

Actually yes there is. The extra fuel that the ecu dumps when the car is cold can actually wear down cylinder liners prematurely.

I drive without waiting at all. The car will warm itself up, just don't voice off the rev limiter until it's warm.

My M4 takes forever to get to temp per the gauge, usually 10-15 minutes. The yellow rpm box starts at 6500 and moves to 7000 in about five minutes. Which one means car is ready to run full speed ahead??

^This, where are they getting that info from in regards to the S55?

Two minutes? Mine, with the MPE, takes maybe 30 seconds, and I've timed it. It's just that it seems like minutes. To my neighbors it must seem like eternity...

My neighbors across the street have a 330i, an X3, and the daughter has a Mini. We have the M4 with MPE, an M3 Competition Pack, and a Z4 M Roadster with a Stromung exhaust. We were discussing how loud my exhaust was one day (he's never complained) and I asked him if any of the other neighbors have said anything. (we're on a short cul-de-sac with only 10 homes, so most of us are pretty tight.)

He said that someone, who he declined to name, said to him "I can't believe they spent $100,000 on those cars and they sound like that!" I corrected him and said that we didn't pay anywhere near "$100,000" for either car. My wife's M3 is Individual San Marino Blue with Individual Polar Blue contrasting stitching.

I also learned that there are other neighbors, down the block and around the corner, on the intersection street, that know all about our "loud" BMWs.
