Anyone have experience with both? I drove a couple of 570s and they're more interesting visually, feel a couple tenths better than the GTS in terms of street performance, and have cooler doors and interior.

Main drawback is cost of ownership...am I missing anything?

That'd be a sweet upgrade, different experience from the GTS.

Stopped in and talked McLaren with the manager of an exotic dealer not long ago. He was really promotional of the 12C due to current pricing. Suggested a very similar driving experience to the 570S. (I can't speak to either.)

My growing understanding of the McLaren cost of ownership equation is that you'll pay annually for warranty (~$5,000) and service costs ($1,500-$3,000). Cost of ownership between the 12C and 570S should be about equal if you're under active warranty.

Believe you really have to get one that is under original factory warranty (570S), or that is, or could be McLaren Qualified http://www.preowned.mclaren.com. Just too much financial risk sans warranty on these...

12C really does seem a serious amount of car for the $ http://www.preowned.mclaren.com/used...11AAA5CW001622

So that's my only thought -- if I were making the McLaren switch now I'd have to drive a 12C too. See if the 570S driving experience is worth the extra $50k and > depreciation.

Thanks to the turbo lag, the McLaren doesn't feel as powerful as it really is until you push it. The 570s is in fact Ferrari 488 quick, if not quicker. More like a couple seconds quicker than the M4 GTS.

The McLaren has more ground clearance and is more compliant than the M4 GTS. The practicality is actually much better except for the trunk space.

It's a no brainer if you can accept the cost.

It’s encouraging to read that fellow owners see it as a good upgrade. It would be 570S/GT or bust for me - i do not like the looks of the MP4-12C. That doesn’t mean it’s not a great performance bargain, but i wouldn’t be able to get past the aesthetics.

I’ve driven the 570s and 570s spider now, looking to see if i can try out the 570GT. Beyond what i said in the OP, i think it’s quite amazing how comfortable and easy it is to drive in everyday circumstances. My wife was kind of dreading taking her turn, but she said she was encouraged at how confident i immediately seemed behind the wheel, and how good the ergonomics and ride quality were. We’re looking for something a bit less hardcore than the M4 GTS (i would still have a couple of Porsche GT cars for the track or carving the non-existent Florida canyons ), and this just might be the ticket. So i really need to try the 570GT because that’s supposed to be the luxury trim.

I definitely agree that i need to be in the Qualified program or an equivalent third-party service contract/warranty. I can stomach the cost of the car - that’s a predictable expense i can plan for...but if i can’t make the operating costs predictable, it might be a no-go for me.

Who needs canyons when you have amazing traffic circles and kamikaze seniors?

I hear you on the looks. 570 is a major upgrade over the 12C.

Again, my understanding isn't comprehensive, but as I read it the warranty is one of the major perks of McLaren ownership vs other supercars. Yes, you're hemorrhaging money, but it's a fixed cost annually that can be planned up front.

Only other cost consideration (apart from standard stuff - tires, etc.) is the possibility of an annual service during your ownership that's notably more expensive than others. Would have to track down a 570 long-term service schedule.

I'd be hesitant on a third-party warranty option... Word is that the McLaren warranty is negotiable with dealers. Some claimed to have paid as "little" as $3,500 annually after shopping around.

Yeah, i’ve been hearing those cost estimates ($3500-5000 per year of warranty and $2.5-3k annual servicing costs). My hope is that they’re willing to comp me a year of warranty. I’ll also have to quiz the service people there on typical servicing costs - i thought Porsche was bad, this car looks like it “needs” $2k oil changes!

Only a few issues with the jump to a McLaren IMO:

1// Maintenance...even a routine oil change can cost $1,000-$2,000 as it requires removing parts of the engine covering and not something I'd mess with myself.
2// Long term reliability. Honestly the jury is still out on how these bi-turbo V8s will hold u and even nominal repairs ain't cheap.
3// The attention. This is a pro if you want it, con if you don't.

Last, I'd always regret not getting a 600LT if you came that close.

So i started half-heartedly initiating some deals on a couple of local cars.

The trade-in offers for the GTS are really, really shitty. Like, $65k shitty.

Ouch...might be worth keeping around. I know I won't willingly part with mine

Might I suggest "Mauvine Blue"?

I'm not biased with it comes to purple. Promise.

What a fun dilemma! Enjoy the process!

$65k on trade-in. I get trade-in numbers being lower than private sell, but seriously. Then they turn around and sell it for $85k. Guess that's how it works, just hate to think about the dollars and cents of it. Glad I bought mine at a decent price, I suppose.

I know it's not necessarily as exotic as a McLaren, but have you considered a 3RS? 997 or 991. Great cars, fast on track, reliable. Hold their value pretty good. Just a thought. ———-I just re-read a previous post of yours. Looks like you think the GT Porsche's are a bit too harsh for more daily driving....so maybe a 991 turbos S? Crazy fast. Good on track. Reliable. Hold value so-so. Just another thought (I'm partial to 911's, sorry)

Good luck with your decision.

I see the problem - there are five GTS's listed for $80k right now (one by EAG, lolz), all with mileage less than half of mine. So a 65k wholesale offer is still not what I want, but actually in the ballpark of fair. It's kind of amazing how much asks have dropped from even two months ago.

I've been militantly in the camp of 'drive these fuckers', and I regret not the enjoyment I've gotten over 10k Miles, but this is the one scenario where this attitude doesn't really help

Re: the 911 - I already have a GT3 that's not going anywhere, so that's why it's not in contention. Otherwise I wouldn't even be looking at maccas, the 911 is my favorite car ever.
