Guys...stop doing DME software updates unless your dealer needs it to fix a problem. Installing or updating your SW can result in a locked DME.

If you don't want software updated tell your SA why, and also put a sticky note right over the speedo/tach saying DO NOT UPDATE ANY SOFTWARE. I've taken my car to the dealership tuned BM3 and told them so, and above is what my SA said to do.

Same if you're on an Ethanol mix. Put another sticky note to the right of the other software sticky note saying "DO NOT ADD GAS, OWNER RUNS ALCOHOL".

In these cases the service engineer may call you, but better to get a phone call than for someone to F things up.

Okay guys, I think there is a lot of misinformation lingering around

I've just flashed my F80 M3 through OBD with BootMod3 and I had BOTH a recently updated ISTEP and a bootloader that ended with a 002 suffix

Best way to figure out if you can OBD flash, is contact BootMod3 straight-up and having an ENET cable handy

And what then? They already claim you need a bench unlock. Do they do a test or something?

1. Download bm3 agent and run it
2. Connect with car through enet
3. Find car details on web interface
4. Print screen and send to them
5. They check if it can be obd flashed

Considering my istep was very recent and my bootloader version ended with 002 (at least on the program), i definitely fell in the category of "you need a bench flash". At least this is what all the info online strongly suggested. Not the case though, and I'm sure there are loads of people just like me.

Yes, above is the only way for PTF to check for locked/unlocked. I asked them directly. https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1837075

This is the reply I received after mentioning this thread in my request:

Zanin proTUNING Freaks commented:
That bootloader is locked for tuning. It has to be bench unlocked.
If you believe that there is a way around it, you are free to experiment at your own discretion.

As an aside would you be able to PM me your BM3 DME details so I can compare to mine?

If it's any help to anyone: I have a 2017 B58, and my DME requires a bench unlock to flash (per BM3 support and my failed flash attempts)

It does seem to do with whether or not the software has been updated as opposed to production date of DME.

After confirming with both PTF and MHD; bootloader 002 is locked and requires a bench unlock period.

Until Dav3 can verify what his bootloader version was (the one sent to PTF) I would debunk the notion that dme's with bootloader 002 are flashable without bench unlocking first

Unless I'm missing something or reading it wrong, my boot loader version ends in 002. Car is flashed no problem.

Bought the car second hand from Dealership

Dealership updated software before handing car, I believe a 2020 version

Either way I checked it at the beginning of the year and I clearly remember being disgruntled thinking I could not flash

Only 100% way of knowing is checking with bm3 support

Yup thats what i did and both PTF and MHD came back with what i posted earlier.
Your bootloader looks different to post 19_03 iStep bootloaders so it would be interesting to see if it was actually updated. There's also a possibility your car may have already been benched unlocked by the previous owner.

I'm sorry but you posted this same question in 5 different threads with hardly any detail. Please read through all 5 threads entirely and then provide the relevant details. You will see from reading which details are relevant (battery, cable, adapter, phone/laptop, exactly what you did, etc.)

Please pick one thread to work your problem, or start a new thread specific to yours. We need to keep your info consolidated so others can help.

Wanted to contribute here as well. 2015 F80, build date 03/2015.

Had my software updated in February of this year (F020-21-11-550) and flashed MHD Stage 1 (KDcan + Android tablet) yesterday with no issues. No unlock needed.

ECU build date seems to be the limiting factor here.

When I loaded bm3 on to my 2018, their software kept giving me warnings and wouldn’t flash. I emailed support and they told me to force flash, which worked. But now it won’t let me flash back to stock. I emailed them again and they told me that if I flash to stock and relock the dme, I would have to bench unlock to get my tune back. Weird.

Surprised you were able to flash at all. Everyone seems to be locking their cars up in this scenario.

BM3 Flash fail

Same issue here,
Currently on a F56 JCW tbh, but same thing, 2015 Car, MHD and BM3 both say require unlock, tried a force flash, 1% fails and car doesn't start, have to select Relock DME in which it spends 5minutes reflashing and locking, the only option that works and it drives fine...
