DIY F8X front wheel hub/bearing replacement

Disclaimer I am a highly trained individual, just not in auto repair. Exercise due diligence. Wear eye pro. Use jack stands. Practice safe sex. Etc.

Tools required
Torque wrenches with specs ranging from 12nm to 140nm
17mm lug socket
5mm allen
10mm socket
18mm socket
T-60 preferably impact rated

First crack the lugs and get car on jack stands.

What was the reason for replacing the hub?

Bummer! Looks like one of the wrench monkeys didn't get the threads started well enough before blasting the lug bolts with an air-driven impact gun.

So did you have to replace the hub yourself? I can certainly understand if you didn't want them touching your car after that though.

Glad I found this... Thanks to getting new tires today looks like this project is in my immediate future.
At $252 did you buy the hub & bearing: https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-part...bC1sNi1nYXM%3D

Any reason you didn't just buy the hub?
Also, which bolts did you buy? Do you have the PNs?

On the front it comes as an assembly and if you could buy separately I would still change the bearing.

31-20-6-872-920 is the PN I used.

Another thanks. Really good writeup.

Is replacing the rear wheel bearing (which has separate parts for the bearing and the hub) similarly straightforward?

I just did the fronts. Very straightforward with just hand tools and a large torque wrench.

Rear bearings require a "special tool" which is just a hydraulic extractor required to pull hub off of axle

Thanks much for this.

Though I believe the 4 bolts that fasten the hub are Torx PLUS (TP) 60's. A regular T60 might work but probably would fit somewhat loosely.

Hopefully my hubs will last at least a full track season. But will also get a TP60 socket when the time comes.

Thanks for the write up ! Just noticed something interesting. I ordered a new hub/bearing assembly and new bolts. I picked up a t60plus and it fits the new bolts perfect. When I went to remove the original bolts the t60plus wouldn’t fit. Have a feeling it is a t55plus maybe ? Picking up a t60 torx as I type this as all my sets somehow ended right at t55

Also, did you have to disconnect the forward control arm or suspension link ? It appears to be right in the way of one of the bolts.

Tia !
