Greatest Rock Guitarist

If you had one vote for the greatest rock guitarist of all time who would that be?

My vote: Jimmy Page

That’s a tough one because there are many greats. I’d go with Eddie Van Halen.

well, in my humble opinion, due to the size of the portfolio and his longevity despite drugs and alcohol, I'd have to say slowhand-Eric Clapton.

I think Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen and especially Kirk Hammett are my favorites, Jack White has the potential simply due to his outside the box style.

That is a tough one and no easy answer due to the fact that within the realm of rock you have different criteria...ie..songwriting, how innovative, how influential..so you are going to get earlier guys like Page and Hendrix.

But, off the top of my head in the world of rock I would go with a safe bet of Van Halen....he is one of a kind and while many could replicate, he just flat out shredded the shit.

FFS, you bastard. This may be the single most impossible to answer question ever posted on this board. What the hell is wrong with you?

I'll go with my top 5 in no particular order:

Prince
Jimmy Page
Jimi Hendrix
Eddie Van Halen
Eric Clapton

Honorable mention:

Keith Richard
Carlos Santana
Lou Reed
Pete Townsend

Typical republican, 1 Vote only and you do 9...

Lou Reed...I never even thought about him...goes way back to the Velvet Underground...and I remember some good guitar work there. He died a few years ago if I remember correctly. He was a decent player and an excellent song writer.

Prince had some great lyrics...

...Seems that I was busy doing something close to nothing
But different than the day before
That's when I saw her, ooh, I saw her
She walked in through the out door, out door

She wore a
Raspberry beret...

Van Halen...

Yep. Good also. Saw him in concert twice in CA...incredibly fast hands.

I'm a libertarian. And I'm now adhering to the principle of voting early, often, and illegally when I can! I'm heading to Canada, our new 51st state, to exercise my right to vote as a citizen of the world!!

On a more serious note (see what I did there?) this is one of the hardest questions I've seen because it isn't simply objective it's highly emotional as well as judged by moods. Such is our love for music!!
Great thread!!!

Cheers-mk

Isn't this thread about Rock and Rock is all about rebellion? Following the rules means you don't truly understand Rock music.

PS: Please don't take my post as a political statement. It's a joke.

[QUOTE=MKSixer;23280396]I'm a libertarian

I always thought libertarians were intelligent democrats.

“....adhering to the principle of voting early, often, and illegally when I can...”

I have to remember that. It’s a good line.

I'm going with Malcolm Young, all those riffs and keeping that rhythm section on track.

I opened this so I could yell at you all again for having such a shitty taste! You failed me.

I'd add slash to the mix. Though he is from the era of pompous arses, so are the most of us too.

Gary Moore, although he was more blues than rock. Saw him a couple of times. He was a class act. Jimmy Page wrote some of the greatest rock songs but isn't in the same league as Gary Moore when it comes to playing.
Joe Bonamassa isn't far behind, mind you
