I went to RockAuto to buy the Z23 pads for my 2018 but for some reason Z231609B (front) and Z231656 (rear) are only showing up for the 2017 model, not for the 2018. Did BMW change the caliper design for 2018 or is this just a RockAuto mistake?

I'll chime in and provide my brief but positive experience with the Z23 brake pads. Bought the 1609B fronts and the standard rears from Rock Auto for my 2017 and they were very easy to install - maybe 10 minutes per corner at most. Followed the manufacturer's break-in instructions and off I went. Dust is FAR less than OEM to the point where the car is very dirty (mostly due to the Spring pollen storm in VA) but I haven't needed to wash the 666s which is the opposite of normal. Feel is definitely different than OEM pads and these aren't as good on initial bite or overall stopping power but they are totally adequate for street use which is what I bought them for. I have noticed a tiny bit of squeal on first touch when the car has been sitting but then no squeal at all following that. The last thing to be aware of is that these pads give an audible clank/thunk when you reverse or change direction which isn't annoying but is different than the OEM pads.
For what they cost and for the purpose of having a very low dust, streetable pad I'd give the Z23 a 9/10 on execution. The post about the Hawk 5.0s also has me intrigued if they can provide a closer feel to OEM with much less dust. |

I wanted to pop in here to share my recent overwhelmingly positive customer service experience with Power Stop.
I recently purchased a set of the front and rear Z23 pads through one of their vendors but when they arrived, the front pads had incorrect hardware included. I sent an email to Power Stop customer service and that same day, actually within 2 hours even, they responded and apologized for the wrong hardware being included in the kit, and offered to send me the correct hardware. Today (only 4 days later) I received a package which felt very heavy for hardware. I opened it up and much to my surprise they sent a full front pad and hardware kit. The correct hardware was included and now I've got a bonus set of front pads for free. Can't beat that customer service!! |

Those tabs or dog ears are to prevent the pads from slapping the calipers when going from forward to reverse/ reverse to forward. Track pads do not have this and you will hear a distinct clang or clang when changing direction. These prevent that

Hi All,
I am considering the pads for my M Performance brake. I wanted to get Akebono Euro pads, but those are not really available (seem back ordered in multiple sites). All I want is good braking, less noise and dust, and rotor friendly. Would appreciate current owners feedbacks after owning them for a while. Are these still working fine after some miles? Thanks! |

F30 owner here with the m-sport brakes (same caliper as the M3 afaik), just wanted to note that these brakes were great initally, but after the anti-squeal wore off I get the same squeal as a lot of people here on the first few applications of the brakes after the cars been sitting. It progressivly got worse and worse, and it's bad enough where people at work commented that they know when I leave every day due to the squeal, even though there's three walls between them and the parking lot. Wouldn't recommend these due to that, I'm thinking of trying to new Akebono pads out instead.

I have had zero issues with these , I'm on north Florida occasionally when it's really cold it will squeak the first time I brake them it's gone.

I recently installed the Z23 pads per the first post from RockAuto for $86.35 shipped. This was my first time working on M brakes and installation was very easy and straightforward. I followed the lubrication instructions from Power Stop (it calls for paste on the back side/caliper plate as well as the edges where the pads sit in the caliper) and have not experienced any unwanted noise or clunking issues. I also followed the break-in instructions from the packaging. My impressions are inline with a lot of reviews in this thread – the initial bite is much softer than the stock pad and require a bit more effort to get the same stopping power as stock. But, once you get used to it, it’s completely fine. The reduction in dust is unbelievable compared to stock and I’m very happy with these pads. Highly recommended if you’re tired of all that dust.

I installed mine a week or so after getting my car so had the oem pads on for about 200 miles and have driven 2000 more miles with the z23 pads. Agree installation was a piece of cake. I get the clunking noise every time when switching between drive and reverse. I am using oem shims in the back and the power stop shims at the front. I think the clunking is coming from the front but it's hard to tell. I will swap the shims back to oem when I put my summer wheels back on. As for stopping power, agree that oem have a lot more bite. These definitely have reduced braking power but as stated before you get used to it. It still has better braking power than other cars like my dads new accord, so on street driving it's fine. Definitely won't recommend these for aggressive driving on a track.

maybe it is better to use the Z26 brake pads over the Z23. z26 probably has better braking/stopping power.

After 12K miles and progressively louder squeaking with the Z16s, I looked into EBC and Hawk street pads but the mixed reviews made me skeptical. I ended up going with Z23s because of the general sentiment that they are superior to the Z16s.
It's only been 500 miles since I've installed them. Quick observations: - Improved bite compared to the Z16s, but still worse than stock and prone to fade in hard driving. - Clunking when shifting between first and reverse is muted but still present. Used the replacement clips provided by Powerstop for the fronts and OE for the rear (the Powerstop ones were larger and harder to squeeze in). - Greatly reduced screeching when reversing if the car has been sitting for a while. - So far, no squeaking when rolling to a stop. Used CRC disc brake quiet instead of the provided lube. - I'd say they produce about 15% more dust than the Z16s, which is still dramatically less than OEM and worth the sacrifice in bite. Overall, I'm happy with the Z23s and would recommend them to others for normal street driving. |

Yes I used the new brackets. When installed correctly, the brackets have a very tight fit. My car had 3700 miles when I did the swap and the old OEM brackets seemed somewhat hardened compared to the new ones, most likely from the combination of heat cycling and brake dust accumulation. I would not recommend using the old OEM brackets with new pads because they didn't seem like they would hold the new pads in place as well. In fact, I believe both the BMW replacement procedure and the Power Stop literature both recommened replacing the brackets with new ones when swapping pads.

I have these pads on my m. They failed me in the canyons some weeks back. Car wouldn't stop. Had to drive 20 mph and let them cool down for 15 min before they worked again but now they're just soft. I get the squeal and clunking. I used the shims they provided. They are very low dust but that means nothing when you can't stop. Currently looking for new pad suggestions

Swapped the included M Performance brake pads out for PowerStop Z23 pads as talked about in this thread. I couldn't stand the amount of brake dust coming off the things!
Just finished bedding them in - so far initial impressions are maybe 95% of initial bite when rolling off the foot brake and back on. I almost can't tell they're different pads from the M Performance ones yet. Braking from 35 - 45 mph feels completely identical to the M Performance pads. I can say that had I performed the break in procedure that I did on the PowerStops but using the M Performance pads my wheels would be dirty as heck. So far so good!

Nope, but I will recommend the z23's. I swapped my fronts about 1k miles ago, I haven't noticed any significant difference in performance but the brake dust is like 5% of what the stock pads are. I'll be swapping my rears out to z23's soon as well.

I’m finally fed up with the amount of brake dust the M pads generate. I hate spending time getting the wheels sparkling to have the shine dulled in two days. I just placed my order for the Z23 pads and will have my buddy install them. I’ve read it’s easy but I’ve never done brakes before so don’t want my first to be with my F83. I am looking forward to the much lower brake dust but after reading through the thread, I’m worried about the possible squeals and clunks (don’t experience any with the M pads now). Below is a summary of what I think I should do (or have my friend do).
1) Lubricate with the included paste on the back side/caliper plate as well as the edges where the pads sit in the caliper. 2) Follow break-in instructions. 3) Reuse OEM shims instead of using the ones that come in the package. 4) Reuse existing brake sensors. Did I misstate anything or miss anything? Thanks in advance! |
