My sympathies would be for someone who is legitimately renting out his own possessions on Turo, but in this case, karma came back and got you good.
This car was not a lease. I owned the vehicle outright.

Apologies, I misread the situation. Hope it all works out for you!

OP - Beautiful car, but as Steve says "All good things come to an end at some point" so relish in the fun you had with it and move on to the next. Do you think minus your mods, the vehicle would have been in as high demand to rent on Turo (for example OEM M4 vs. Modded).
I agree with you on that. I've ran the hell out of mine when I was in Germany. In the coolant temp stayed low.

I find it funny how many people here are so offended that someone they don't know and likely will never see is renting out his M4. To the point of seemingly being happy at his misfortune...

Does this fact diminish you guys somehow? Does it devalue or make your cars less prestigious because you drive the same or similar car? Do you know they rent out Ferraris and Lamborghinis on Turo?

I feel the same way when someone mentions something like "I was washing my car and it was a bit sunny out," and people can't help themselves and just have to say something like "I would NEVER wash my car that way."

Just exercise restraint and don't be an asshole about useless shit. It's not that hard. There's plenty of other stuff to care about.

Hope this all ended up working out for you, OP! I was leading the group drive that this occurred on, truly a freak incident.

What are they basing that assessment regarding the clutch on? Was there clear evidence that the fire originated at the clutch? The odds of that actually being the cause are extremely low. Perhaps if there was a severe oil leak dripping on it but even then it's highly unlikely to cause a fire. Bet you'd have better odds of getting struck by lighting.

P.S. I'd want to get my hands on that clutch. It most likely "survived" enough to get a good indication of whether it has anything to do with the fire.

You'll find the clutch on eBay remanufactured for $250

They are trying to say the clutch was worn so bad that there was metal against metal contact that heated up and caused materials around the clutch to ignite. Sounds like a bunch of bs to me. If a clutch ever gets to that point it's definitely noticeable way before then that there's a problem.

The renter himself even said the car as driving normally when he first got the car as did myself and the renter the day before.

As a 18 year veteran of the premium auto service industry, I concur with your assessment. The car would become undrivable before it started a fire.

question, do you have the key that was being used at the time of the incident? Or was it left in the car?

I'm not sure. I haven't seen the car since the incident. There's a chance the key is still there. What can this prove?

The key updates periodically and stores a boatload of information that can be read at the dealer with a key reader. Could be useful info stored in it that may help your case. It will have a time/date stamp of the last update, and it stores everything from battery voltage to fault memory.

I just checked the auction site it's listed on and yes the key fob is present so thanks for the info.

I assume the DME is nice and toasty at this point, but I'd make sure as it is a treasure trove of data if it can be read.
