Don't know where this slots into the lineup...there's already the GTS which is the most hardcore street legal variant, and the GT4 which is a full on racecar. Wasn't the CSL supposed to replace the GTS as the most track ready car? Why would you introduce the CSL on the F8x chassis when the GTS already exists? It would make more sense if they introduce the CSL on the G8x M4.

BMW typically tests new models using the "old" or current body style to test engines etc.
I remember seeing an Xdrive F10 M5 at one point. So we could be looking at the next gen M4 CSL that they're testing out the engine on a GTS. |

I believe, but can only find an indirect citation right now, that this M4 CSL rendering was once posted by SCOTT26:
http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...5&postcount=58 It bears some similarities to these spy shots. |

GTS seems the most likely current platform (other than the GT4) to test and fine tune various aero and "track" performance components. Could be for any developmental purpose.
On board with a CSL as pictured a few posts above though...

M Division has played games with weight numbers in the past, so I think some healthy cynicism/skepticism toward the soon-to-be-resurrected CSL badge should be expected. Hopefully the vehicles live up to the hype that BMW M officials are already trying to start to build for them.

I bet this is the F82 M4 CSL that SCOTT26 was talking about. I don't think they are testing the engine of next gen M4 in the current F82 chassis.
This is what SCOTT26 said in the past: |

I wish BMW made their wings curve with the lines of the car the same way Porsche's do. The wing on the GTS (and this car) looks like they grabbed a generic wing off the streets and tacked it on.

Looks like an amateur job on a Gts, not an OEM test mule.
From what I heard, the CSL will be replacing the GTS nomenclature in the future but not meant to coexist with the Gts in the same model line. |

With CSL replacing GTS, that leaves the M4 GTS as an equivalent to the hypothetical M4 CSL. ...it is not unsafe to assume BMW will roll out M2 CSL and M8 CSL models in the U.S. in the future, and with the known quantity that is the M4 GTS, BMW already has a standard to which its modern CSL cars will be held... http://www.thedrive.com/news/20803/b...-supersede-gts

It's running a race derived version of the 8cyl 3 turbo diesel. Including water injection and having the engine re-positioned 6 inches further back. The first mid-engined M4...The swan song for the F82 chassis as well as diesel engines being available in Germany.
Hey, nobody but BMW really knows whats under the hood. Could be. |
