Dropped a couple of trim screws straight into the HVAC vents on the top of the dashboard.

Would have to disassemble the entire dashboard to get them out...so they live there forever now.

During an engine oil change, I put the oil filter O-ring in a wrong place. 25 miles later, got a low oil level light, pulled over and sure enough, engine bay and underbody were all soaked in oil. I think there was maybe one litre of oil (out of the 6.5 that go into an N55) left in the engine afterwards.

No doubt you were very lucky. A patient in the long term care facility I worked at, he was working under his truck and his jack failed and the entire truck crushed his right leg. He screamed for help but no one was home or nearby. Took nearly 30mins before his son came home and saw him unconscious and his leg pretty much eggplant color.

Needless to say, he had to have his leg amputated and is pretty much life-long married to opioids now along with several antidepressants.

Not entirely my fault, but I was buying a pristine Honda S2000 chassis (higher mileage but the body was perfect, no dents, scratches etc.) and I needed to put wheels on it to get it to the tow truck. I had had the car on 4 jack stands and had already dropped the back of the car, and now had to lower the front onto the wheels. The guy I was buying it from said he'd move the jack stands from under the car so I didn't need to leave the car jack and pull them individually out. I proceeded to drop the car onto the ground, but before the wheels hit the ground I heard a crunch and realized the guy hadn't fully removed the jack stand, and it had caught itself underneath the front passenger fender, pushing the bottom of the fender where it meets the door up about 4 inches. It was a very depressing moment, and a life lesson to never trust anyone other than yourself in these situations. Being lazy cost me a bunch and destroyed a VIN matching fender.

10/10 times I forget to plug the MAF back in, get codes and immediately think I installed whatever it was wrong. Intakes, charge pipes, etc.

Also, are two sockets and a magnet chilling in the belly pan waiting for the new owner to remove it.

That 3rd person story probably takes the cake. I'm gonna go have a drink now lol

I broke one of the plastic rods that hold the paddle shifters onto the steering wheel when I was upgrading to carbon paddles. My left paddle now squeaks a bit. I'll probably replace it with some piano wire when I get annoyed enough. BMW and plastic parts everywhere

Cross-threaded one of the chargepipe to turbo bolts. Luckily a 10mm bolt from Lowes is somehow just the slightest bit bigger so it plus a washer works as a perfect replacement.

I recently serviced my Touareg TDI including oil change, coolant flush etc. After changing oil I dispensed the old coolant into one of the empty 5 qt oil jugs. A week later I checked oil level it was slightly low so I topped it off using one of the 5 qt jugs that still had fresh "oil". As I started pouring the oil I noticed it seemed very thin. My dumbass just topped off the oil with used coolant. Another oil change immediately ensued.

They did, for about a year!! They must have migrated somewhere else because the rattles stopped, but who knows where they might turn up.

On my previous car i always drove onto some small wooden blocks to get my jack under the front jacking point, when finished i simple grabbed the wheel spokes and rolled the car off the small blocks.
Only problem, when my car rolled forward my finger got stuck between the wheel spoke and the brake caliper
That hurts, and only way to get my finger removed was pushing the car back onto the small blocks wit my other arm

The other day I had a bunch of tiny screws sitting in the open lid of my tool box. Forgot about them. went to move the tool box, closed it. scattered the screws inside the tool box and needed to fish them out. Only one actually landed on the driveway, so it was not that big a deal. It was a comical error. Typically actual repair mistakes are usually to do with order of re-assembly. Find some little fiddly piece that needs to be attached at step 3, that you remember when you are step 9 and get to do some extra practice un/re doing some work. Most recently was a plastic ( not really functional ) cap on the back of a hood release mechanism on my 740iL that I took off to lube, assembled without it on, and then found the piece. I need better tool organization, and a better workspace.

I definitely fo 1 step forward and 2 steps back a LOT during reassembly.

F'd mine up only temporarily by installing a v style 3 piece carbon diffuser. Luckily, I immediately took it off.

It was the first time I was bleeding brakes on a previous bmw years ago. I was extremely nervous about getting air in the lines, running the reservoir low, getting fluid on the paint….etc. I was super careful with the motive bleeder and it was going smooth until I topped off the reservoir. I didn't take into account expansion and filled the fluid to max cold. After test driving I came back and noticed fluid seeping from the cap, it had dripped a couple drops on the inner fender and already bubbled the paint. I touched it up, but made me sick for awhile. I leave brakes to the pros to this day!
