M3/M4 vs F430

Anybody who driven both or own both? Looking at the dynos for the F430, they produce similar power to the F8X at around 420 whp and about 300 ft lbs of torque at the wheels. The two cars should be equal in speed? Or will the F8X be faster because of its torque advantage?

The F430 still feels faster and of course the sound is just insanely addicting. The F430 will also snap oversteer much quicker than the M4 (and the M4 is no slouch either) so you better be quick with your hands.

it's amazing to think that the M3 has always been so close in performance to the previous generation Ferrari.

F80 ~ 430
E90 ~ 360
E46 ~ 355

none of these are equals, but they are all close, albeit to varying degrees.

that, of course, has no impact on the desirability of the Ferraris, but I still find it interesting to think about and contextualize the rate at which the performance capabilities of cars have increased in the recent past.

Shouldn't be comparing cars based on HP. A Ferrari is a Ferrari, as much as I love my M4, it doesn't hold a candle to the driving experience of an F-car. To me, they are the pinnacle.

But if you're thinking about getting either or, it's of much importance to take into account the service and maintenance bills Ferrari's can rack up. The BMW offers a lot, so it is something to take into account.

I own both a brand new M4 and an '07 F430. Totally different cars. I take the F430 out maybe once a week for a "smile drive" and the M4 is my wife's daily driver. We just picked up the M4 last week so not a lot of experience with it but the 430's sound and total driving experience is heads or tails above anything else I've driven. I traded an '11 Audi R8 Spyder for the Ferrari and have never looked back. Numbers say they're almost the same. We are still in the break in period for the M so haven't experienced the real acceleration of the M4. I can say that the Ferrari dealer network/parts/maintenance is abysmal although I haven't had to rely on it for much. A lost key can cost upward of $950 and a maintenance manual $400! After the "warranty" is over, you try your best to find an indy to do the work but even he is at the mercy of the Ferrari parts system. I've never owned a BMW out of warranty so I don't know about maintenance with it and I've never own a Ferrari in warranty.

Time will tell...
