Air condition question

2015 BMW ///M4 F82 DCT 46k

I’ve owned the car for over a year now. Just trying to see if there is something that I am missing. I owned a n54 135i before this car and when I had the air conditioning on and had it on auto set at 72 degrees depending on the outside temperature the fan would either blow harder or less. With this car when I have it on auto temperature set to 72 degrees the fan speed will not change depending on the outside temperature.

My question. Is there a way for it to act like my old 135i and the fan will adjust to the weather temperature outside?

Thanks,
Bailey

I have had a 2015 and now a 2019 M4.
I have not experienced the fan speed changing.

Gotcha the 135i fan speed for example on a warmer day would start off at a higher speed then decrease as the inside cools down. Thank you

In Auto mode, the “fan speed button” controls the intensity of the air coming out of the system. The fan speed button in Auto mode basically controls the maximum the fan will blow to reach the set temperature. This means if you have the temperature set to 72 and the fan speed set to the lowest setting, the system will try to get the cabin to 72 degrees but the fan will only blow at the lowest speed. If you have the fan speed set at higher levels, the fan will blow at higher speeds to reach the set temperature. I usually have mine set to fan speed intensity level 4 when in auto mode in the summer so the fan will run at a high enough speed to keep the cabin cool.

Being typical Germans, BMW made the system way more complicated then it needed to be.

Thanks DDD31 I was under the impression that the M3's auto speed was just always lower than I cared for, and I often manually bumped it up to 3 or 4. Did not realize that the manual setting when using auto ( lol ) is the upper bound for the fan speed.

This auto/manual climate control is a disappointment, they could've offer only manual option since I'm spending that much time adjusting fan speed. Didn't know 135i had auto fan, always thought Bmw kept it for 5 series and up.

It's been more than 10 years since I've sold my E39 and it had auto fan speed as well. Still missing that feature, the only thing I would rarely move was fresh air slider to hot or cold, most of the time was in the middle. Climate control was always set to one temperature year around and it would do its thing. Was great entering hot car without need to press max ac button or in cold conditions fan would start low and increase the speed as the engine would get warmer. When the cabin would get warm, fan would go back down to low speed. Even just opening the window while smoking would make it change the speed.

F3X/F8X seems to have copy paste system from E9X. I didn't mind not having this in E92 since it never felt like model with some fancy options.
This platform on the other hand has so many of them, it's a shame they couldn't include full auto climate. It's been 20 years since 5 or 7 series have had it and it should've been shared here. Not talking about true dual climate zone with individual fans like E38 has, the one from E39 would do just fine.

Is it just me. But on the highest fan speed, the fan makes a lot of noise.

The F80 does have auto fan it just operates slightly different then one would expect. The fan changes speed automatically you just have to change the intensity setting to the highest setting if you want the fan to blow at it’s maximum speed. The fan setting only sets how hard the fan will blow to get to the set temperature. If you set the fan setting at maximum intensity it will automatically reduce the fan speed from maximum to maintain the set temperature.

The system is quite confusing but once you understand it’s idiosyncrasies it works fairly well.

Yea the f80/f30 does have a loud fan, the 5 series fans are much superior especially since they’re 2 fans for the front passengers.

In auto mode, it adjusts the fan speed, however you can actually use the physical fan buttons to adjust the fan even more?

I really hate how there is no "sync" button to make both sides of the car the same temp. Like how did my last car that was from 2013 have it but not this?? LOL

For sure, I came from a 2014 S4 and the climate control was easier to control and had the sync temp feature. I read in another thread that you can use the temp dial by the lock/unlock button to slightly adjust the temp.

That only affects the center vents.
