Weight Reduction

I have a base model M4 making about 680whp

Thinking of getting some weight reduction done. However i'm curious to know whether weight reduction is done at the cost of traction ?

In other words, i know it will be helpful on the track but does it make the car harder to drive on the road ( eg 100-200 runs )

Seen some videos of M4 gts's that show them struggling for traction

I dont track my car but looking to improve my dragy timings.

What would you recommend that I remove ? If any

Isn't the general rule for every 100 lbs of weight saved, you gain 0.1 seconds? Seems like a lot of work for not much return.

However, I would probably focus on unsprung mass first since that will provide the greatest benefit.

Girodisc rotors
Lightweight wheels 18"
Michelin tires since those generally weigh less compared to other brands
Coilovers
SPL suspension front and rear to save weight compared to stock arms

That more weight improves “traction” is a complete myth. Weight distribution will have an effect on traction, but as a general rule, the more weight you have, the more “traction” you’ll need to accelerate that weight. It’s simple physics.

There’s a good thread here that shows how much the different components weigh: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1077612

Sprung and unsprung mass have the same effect on acceleration…

I meant the greatest benefit in addition to acceleration times

Start with the cheapest options. Remove interior trim panels, carpet, sound deadening material, extra seats, center console, dashboard etc. Some of the more expensive options are a CF hood, a titanium exhaust, cat and resonator and muffler delete, forged 18" wheels, lighter suspension components, fuel cell, a/c delete, windshield and rear windshield replacement, headlight delete... I'm sure there's so much more.

That's 10's of thousands in mods right there, and not worth it if you don't track. If you just want to improve your draggy times, I'd first look at your tires. If you're still on street tires like MPS4S, there's your first step.

add Xdrive from alpina if you want to improve traction. There is a guy in russia did it, it's on youtube.

Otherwise easily reversible and free weight reduction items are to have no more than 1/4 tank of fuel, take out passenger side front and rear seats, floor mats and trunk carpeting. There is at least 175lb savings right there. Any other weight reductions would be costly and would yield minimal benefit.

Stock dampers are aluminium unlike most other aftermarket coilovers.

Antigravity battery @ 8.2 kg (OEM 13.6 kg)
Recaro Pole Positions @ 5 kg each without mounts and since those don't fold, rear bench can go out (which is at least -12 kg)
Lighter wheels
Lighter BBK

Easiest way to shed weight without compromising comfort.

The door panels are very heavy! You could remove and leave the switches and put a strap for door handle! The rear panels and carpet are the easy ways to shed weight!

I have GTS seats, GTS hood, CCB brakes, M performance exhaust and this summer lighter wheels will come on. That makes about 60 kg's, or 132 lbs.
Öhlins coilovers is about the same weight as stock suspension.
Car will weigh about 1565 kg's (3443 lbs) with full tank. Full option M performance car except CD changer and smokers package.
