The M3 after this one will probably be part electric, what will you say to that?
Bye. even to next turbo one, bye...

How about a 4 cyl turbo in the next M3? The 1977 320i David Hobbs drove in IMSA was a 2.0L 4 cyl turbo making 650hp.

I couldn't care less what they decide to do with the next M3. This current one for me is a keeper. My next ride will most likely be an M5 or a Panamera.

With all these rumours I do not care whether V6 or I6. For me what is important is that the M3 get a special M worthy engine, and not just a tuned BMW AG engine. I also do not care about M3 Legend any more, let the F32M just be an M version of the 4 Series Coupé F32, and so be called M4. I'll take an M4 CSL.

Not happening. It wouldn't surprise me that BMW would go to a V6, as it makes alot more sense as far as packaging goes, but 3 turbos? You don't need 3. Hell, you don't NEED 2. The amount of heat and cooling capacity required would negatively offset the smaller packaging of a V6. Not to mention, the increased weight and cost of the extra turbo and plumbing.

This is about as likely to happen as the M3 pick-up truck.

Legendary V8? It's been around for one (street) model run. What IS legendary is their I6. Their turbos are becoming such as well.

The new M turbo will be excellent even without the 8.

Interesting... very interesting.

What would be the advantage of a 3 turbo design as opposed to 2? Throttle response? Efficiency? I'm just not sure it would outweigh the cons of having all that extra plumbing, weight, intercoolers etc.

The V6 makes sense to me though---That would allow them to mount the engine further back in the chassis along with all the peripherals like intercoolers, oil coolers etc--- thus making more room for them and increasing their size.

I can't afford a new M3 anyway... so what do I care lol

Maybe it'll be a motor like the Porsche 918 Spider.

Excuse my ignorance, but what would be the advantages of going to a v6 over the inline 6. BMW has pretty much perfected the inline 6 so why switch. Couldn't they just make a tri turbo inline 6???

It would go against BMW's policy of sticking to 0.5l per cylinder.

That seems plausible.

The S65 is essentially E60 M5/M6's V10 w/ V2 slashed off. With F10 M5 having V8 w/ TT, F30 M3's V6 would similarly have V2 slashed off.

I just don't see the need, as the 3rd turbo will add more cost, more plumbing, more packaging issues, more heat management issues for just a slight improvement in throttle response. They're better of with the I6 and twin turbos. The only reason I can think of a need for the V6 would be to improve the weight distribution, assuming the car sans engine is already nose heavy (relatively speaking). I also don't think they'd want to lose both their famous throttle response and smoothness in one shot. Losing the throttle response is bad enough, to lose the smoothness of the I6 or 90 deg V8 is even worse. Just my dois centavos.

Weight distribution, better balance, compact packaging (more room in the engine bay), etc.

As for added complexity, BMW is better than most at complicated engine design & building.

I still call BS on the V6. I am sticking with the 3L "S55" I6.

If BMW decides to show this much disrespect for it's heritage and it's blood, then I will not drive one anymore. I love this car, there's nothing else in the world like it, but I couldn't live with a BMW V6. It even looks bad in writing.

N54 = single scroll, twin turbo
N55 = dual scroll, single turbo

Why not for next M3, 3.3L I6 with twin turbo, twin scroll? That should be good for 450HP easy right?
