Definitely fast, but still can't get over the silence and soulless feel when driving. It's one of the biggest complaints I have with the car market today, so many cars are fast, so few are built for drivers with soul. They're just sterile boxes with no personality. It's like comparing Marcus Ericcson to James Hunt.

I don't like our sound coming through the speakers, either.

ditto X 11919193999999999999 I have respect for the technology of a Tesla but they are super boring to drive and even more boring to look at. I need noise and feeling in my car experience.

Much of that advantage appeared to be traction. I’d be interested in seeing the same race from a 30 roll (where the cars are in the correct settings), as that should give an idea of how hard the car actually pulls. My guess is at lower speeds the Tesla may still win.

Is it? I think what Tesla wanted was for the Model 3 Performance to be your one and only. Kind of like the M3. Take it to the track and drive it back home.

Tesla's Super Charging network is growing. I wouldn't be surprised if some tracks have them installed, honestly.

I agree completely. I do to mine, and will always recommend to others, coding out ASD.

That C63S though! Was surprised how much speed it built at the end.

The C63 was indeed fast, just like the E63 in that other drag race video with the M850 and Model 3. But to be honest never really get the point of drag races An EV is easily rather quick in a straight line. For me driving experience is all that matters and an EV is pretty damn boring when it comes to that. Plus I love a proper engineered petrol engine And I am not a fan of those driving iPads, look at that dash of the Model 3

I’m tempted by the 3 performance. I love straight line acceleration. The thing beats a Carrera GTS. The big issue for me at this point is looks. I just can’t get over the front end. Maybe by the time I’m in the market, they’ll do a refresh. But let’s be honest, a total rocket with so few moving parts and virtually no maintenance... it’s pretty impressive.

Experience vs Numbers

On paper the Tesla Model 3 is a great car.
Driving it, massive torque on demand at any time.
However its so quiet, front of the car looks like a Pinocchio's nose.

Driving the Model 3 and the M3, the clear difference is the M3 has a roar (even with ASD off, that makes me feel like a kid again).

The M3 can sound like a race car. Model 3 can't. Model 3 is an impressive car, but it doesn't provide the experience the M3 does.

What exhaust is on your m3? I had the stock exhaust on a ‘15 and the best thing I can say about it is that it was loud.

Yea, I have it for a DD. In a couple years I want to pair it with a Cayman GTS or a two seater. It is fine as a daily, an okay road trip car, but it's my personal sentiment as many people have taken thousand miles long road trip with no issues.

I wish BMW would build cars like the Redux E30 M3:

https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/13/...#slide-7541309

simple, fast, and mechanical. None of the tech wizardary, leave that to Tesla.

its a great car. just not sure where it would fit in my garage. there are much better daily drivers out there from a cost perspective (my civic) and there are much more exciting cars that can seat 4 adults (f80 6mt). in fact the model 3p is like $7k more than what I paid for my M3 and civic combined.

the main thing that draws me to them isn't the battery power or straight line performance. I just want that autopilot !

Get the base model “standard plus range” rwd model 3 in that case

Or honestly, just keep waiting. There’s upcoming porsche sedan, bmw just showed a 711hp 5er EV concept, so there’s so much change coming to this sector

You can also get a good amount of the benefits with the “active cruise control” that can do the automatic distance following, in very cheap EV in the 80 miles range class

At the last CCA chatper autoX, we had a 50:50 mix of BMWs and M3's of all ages (including F8x), and non-BMWs.
The only two cars that sounded really great were an AMG 63s, and a Mustang GT350R.

Sadly, if you are serious about soulful sounds coming out of your car, you may just be driving a wrong car brand altogether!

You definitely haven't driven one with purpose, then.

I autoXed my TM3P, and it was anything but boring.
More like frighteningly quick.
I had to re-learn how to pre-plan an autoX run, inserting braking points in places where I would never have needed to brake in an F80. That thing absolutely hauls ass, and the feedback you get from tire squeal is way more informative than the useless engine farts coming out of F80.

a

P.S.: TM3P is ~500 lbs heavier than F8x, and you can feel every pound of that through the slaloms. It also needs more rubber on all four corners. But once you find the new "heavy car" rhythm, it's incredible.

My $0.02, get someone’s well sorted and pre modded 987 S now rather than waiting on a new p car

What’s the factor that has caused you say your Tesla is just “ok” for long trips? Recharge time? that added +1hr to my LA to SF drive so I can see it

I actually like the sound of my M3. It took a long while, but it has definitely grown on me. The only real thing I wish it didn't do was the cold start lawn mower, but after a few second when it settles down it's not bad.
It's nothing like the sound from my Aston, but I didn't go into it expecting it to compete with the NA V12 sound.

To your point on the V8's.... that's just a sound that is tough to beat. I don't think any other motor can compete with that sound. I might be partial to the brand, but among the V8's I'd say the V8 Vantage makes one of the most beautiful and brilliant sounds from any motor ever produced. I even prefer it to the V12.
