Assessing potential damage from money shift
Last week I let my friend drive my MT F80. He downshifted at high revs from 3rd to 2nd, and while looking over from the passenger seat it appeared the revs went into the red. Best guess is 7,500-8,000. That was 6 days (and 300 km) ago, and since the car has been asbolutley fine with no signs of damage. Car was basically at the end of brake in when it happened.
My friend is a good guy and can afford and offered to do anything needed to correct any damage including helping to buy extended warranty, or even replace the whole engine if needed. I don't want to take anything from him unless I know for sure damage was done, or it's very possible the damage will show its ugly face years down the road. Is there a way to absolutely test if any damage was done? If nothing has happened since does that mean no damage was done? If it's possible an issues could show in years to come can I go to the dealer to have them run a test to see if the revs past 7,500? At that point I wouldnt care if they knew because if damage is possible and it showed it went above I'd probably have him replace the engine. No sense in living with the car until a problem happens only for the dealer to run a test and deny it because of this anyway. thanks |

Yea if no wierd noises you should be fine. I once did it on my last car, dash lit up like a christmas tree but there was no damage. Drove it for like 20k miles after that before I sold it.

In my experience, money shift damage is immediately apparent.

Ok that's good to hear. He is a good friend and will be there years down the road, so in essence I do have insurance should something come up. I unplugged ASD (which is a must IMO), so I can really hear the engine with no other other sounds. It does sound perfect to me.
I'm doing a 1,500km road trip in the next couple weeks and will be pushing the car during many stretches. Figured if nothing happens during that I should definitely be in the clear. |

Never money shifted but got lazy on the clutch a couple months ago and ground Third gear. I was in a really bad mood rest of the drive home.
If your buddy didn't get above redline then no worries. For peace of mind have dealer pull max RPM at next visit to confirm or deny whether redline was exceeded. |

S55 motor is $20k+?? Is your friend aware of that? Lol. All seriousness, your engine is fine. Keep driving the hell out of it and enjoy.

My biggest concern is that from everything ive read it seems damage can be done and you may not even know it. Its really been an annoyance because I just can't shake the thought something could be wrong, power could be lost or something may happen down the road. |

Wouldn't a compression test reveal if there are any slightly bent valves?
I would do it for the peace of mind. Alan

I don't believe that should there be a problem years down the road that an over-rev from years prior would factor in to a warranty claim. Not even sure if years of data is even stored.
People track their car and although they may not over rev, they for sure stress their cars more so than driving on the street. Also it's tough to say that years from now you would be able to blame a slight over rev from years prior. If it's driving fine now, I'f assume it is fine and not ask for any money now or down the line. |

My concern would be if you bring the car in to the dealer at some later date for warranty work on the engine (crank hub comes to mind), they would be able to see this over-rev incident in the DME memory and would reject the warranty work.

Right. I had a "friend" do one too, and yes it was immediately very obvious that something was really really wrong with the engine.

Have him put $30k in an escrow account for a year...just to be safe.
Seriously though, it sounds like the car is fine. Drive it, and be merry.
