You've heard the phrase "Once bitten, twice shy"? I'm still debating whether to get an extended warranty based on the experience with our first BMW, my wife's 2011 335is Coupe, which had the N54 engine. It was Le Mans Blue and had a 6MT.

We bought this car and did Euro Delivery in May 2011. Shortly after the car was re-delivered in the U.S. we discovered that the exhaust flapper valve was stuck open and that was replaced under warranty. Then the cruise control would quit functioning over 60 MPH, when we were most likely to use it. The car had to be completely reflashed to solve this problem. The moonroof started acting up, opening halfway and then closing again, or even worse, closing halfway and then reversing. After at least three attempts to fix that problem, the moonroof motor was replaced. The front brake pads cracked and the front brake pads and rotors were replaced, not once, but twice. During one out-of-town trip, the charge pipe cracked and was replaced under warranty. On another trip, one of the two turbos failed and was replaced under warranty. Sometime during the original warranty period, the paint started flaking off the front bumper, in the corners of the compound curves. It was repainted under warranty.

Based on these problems, we bought an extended warranty in January 2015. A few months later the coolant pump failed while my wife was coming home from work, on the transition ramp between two freeways and the car was flat bedded to the dealer. We paid a $50 deductible. Then, after I took the car in to have the airbags replaced (finally), I pulled into a parking lot near our house to stop for groceries and I heard a pop and the engine sounded like there was a marble in it. The car was flat-bedded to our dealer and they determined that it had spun a main bearing. The engine was replaced with a short block. They agreed to eat the $50 deductible. This was in spite of the fact that all oil changes were done at the dealer according to the schedule and I also did mid-interval oil changes. This was at 70,000 miles. The dealer estimated that this would have been a $10,000 job. We would have just sold the car as salvage.

After that, on another out-of-town trip, a coil pack failed. We bought one at an AutoZone and a mechanic friend of ours replaced it for us. After talking with our service manager about the failed coil pack, he agreed to look at the rest of them and ended up replacing the aftermarket coil pack and two more coil packs, and all six spark plugs. (Since it was a short block, all of these parts were transferred from the old engine.) This happened literally a few days before the extended warranty expired.

After the extended warranty expired the second turbo failed. We paid $600 for the labor and the dealer supplied the parts at no charge. Finally, the charge pipe failed again, but it was covered under an extended parts warranty, as that part was known to fail repeatedly and it's part of the emission system.

Once the charge pipe was replaced, we put the car up for sale and it sold with 72,000 miles on it for $17,000. We had already taken Euro Delivery on the replacement car, my wife's 2018 M3.

I think we paid somewhere between $2,000-$3,000 for the extended warranty. Was that extended warranty worth it? In our case, absolutely. I could buy another extended warranty for the M4, have nothing go wrong, and still be ahead. I rarely buy an extended warranty for anything else I buy, unless maybe it's cutting-edge electronics (my first $5,000 HDTV in 2001 for example), but the extended warranty on the BMW seemed to make sense, and I'm glad that I bought it. If you think that maybe my wife is hard on cars, her previous car was a 1999 Toyota Solara with a 6MT which she owned for 13 years and 140,000 miles. The only problem with that car was a failed clutch master cylinder three weeks after we bought it. I hated that car, but at least it was reliable.

The M4 is a different chassis with a different engine and I haven't had any problems with it. Should I get an extended warranty or not? I don't know and I've got until May to make a decision.

These M cars are best moved on soon after warranty.

They definitely aren't built to last.

I purchased an extended warranty from my BMW dealer, it's good until February 2023 or 84,000 miles (car only has 33k, and I work from home so there's no way I'll hit 84k or even close by 2023). Covers (supposedly) nearly everything except for the usual wear and tear items. I had to figure out if I wanted to mod the car for speed, or keep as is and enjoy for a at least a few more years worry free. I decided the car was plenty fast enough, so peace of mind meant more. It sure wasn't cheap though, but whatever.

This seems like the most reliable M car yet.

I got one of the axle seals on the diff and the M badges on the seats replaced on the last day of the warranty, which was 2 days after I bought the car.

Go on the most mileage thread. . Guy has 123k miles, no problems.

Mines due next yr. I'd opt out. These cars seems bulletproof. The 4k I'd spend on a extended warranty.. Rather use it at an indy shop and source used parts if needed.

I am doing the Geico extended warranty (Mechanical Breakdown Insurance), have had it since the car was new. It's a much cheaper option than the aftermarket extended warranties.

That said I'm at 47k miles and have had zero problems other than a roof rail popping up due to failed adhesive strip.

It's a good question at a time when a lot of the cars are going out of warranty.

I'm gambling. Zero warranty claims so far.... hope it keeps up!

ext warranties are not cheap by any means, even at our blowout prices of them for forum members. its a gamble that some take and others dont.

Without sounding too bias I would recommend if you keep it, to get the ext warranty.

here is the link to follow! any issues just shoot me a buzz!!

That doesn’t seem to be the case with the F80 based on what owners in the forums are stating.

Not there yet but planning to do EasyCare Total care. Had it on my 335 from CarMax and the BMW dealership took great care of me with it.

I racked up $10k US in service with no warranty over 1 year and 25K miles driven. The last straw was a leaking radiator $1,600 and a new battery $2,000. Yes the battery is $1,600 plus install and programming. Special lithium ion battery in all M cars. If I had to do it all again, I would have purchased an extended warranty. Still loved that car. hated to trade it in.

Let me rephrase.

Build quality of these cars is shit. Still love driving them - but be prepared to open the wallet post warranty. This applies to all German brands now. Mercedes is no different.
