Tyres

Has anyone tried Michelin Pilot Sport 4S on their GTS? (Do they do the correct sizes.?) They transformed my CSL when I swapped out the Cup tyres in terms of comfort and noise with very little drop off in performance. Cheers. Brian

I have MPS4S on mine. Works great. If you are tracking, they will overheat and get greasy faster than a Cup tire, but are much better for daily use.

265/35/19 in the front and 295/30/20 in the rear.

I put PS4S on my GTS, then I tracked it at Buttonwillow and Autoclub Speedway. They held up great... They arent Cup 2s, but they do come close. If you want to drive to a quick auto cross event or canyon run, you wont be disappointed... I mean you shouldn't be at least, but subjectively speaking, I like them a lot. Other than using Cup 2 and PS4S, Can't imagine putting on lesser tires other than trying to save money.

I know there are several tire threads so sorry if repeating questions already answered-

Can anyone point me to a resource which explains the differences between the Michelin Cup 2 part numbers (Michelin USA website) in identical sizes?

I'm a tire noob and just had mine replaced at the dealer with the star spec OEM, apparently not as sticky as other Cup 2.

Also any disadvantage to going up a bit in size next time - either 275/35/19 or 265/40/19 front (no 285 19's on website) and 295/35/20 rear.

I am hoping for just a little more sidewall for wheel protection.

I'm thinking 305 would rub in the rear but anyone done it?

I will not be lowering the car to track height.

Thanks!

I see Michelin now do both sizes for the GTS the rears have the BMW star, the fronts don’t.

These wheels are quite strong and unlike some lighter wheels, have closely spaced spokes so are less like to absorb a major blow in an area with no spoke - I don't think you need that much sidewall to avoid bending them.

If you go with 265/35/19 and 295/30/20, the sidewalls are both >3.5" which is plenty. 275/35 on the front is not a bad idea, similar height but a little more width to dial out understeer.

If you go to a 295/35, the rear tire is more than 5% taller than stock. Not sure if it will rub.

For the same reason, I wouldn't do 265/40 - 4% increase in height over stock.

I contacted Michelin (twice) and they confirmed that they would not recommend the use of 4s on the M4 GTS, in fact they strongly opposed the use! I don’t really understand this even though they make the tyres in the correct size for both front and rear the latter having the star rating.

I wouldn't listen to Michelin, they are just trying to upsell you on the Cup tire.

The Sport 4S is perfectly fine - you don't need BMW star spec either.

Sounds really fishy, shouldn't be an issue if the sizes/rating match.

I just discovered my car has these tires, and they look to be OEM (2016 date stamp)? Was this an optional tire here in the States?

I'm not a authority but I'm pretty sure every GTS came with Cup 2 as OEM. It would be very strange if they put an all season tire on a few, versus the extreme performance summer only Cup 2.

Unless your car was delivered to Iceland.

Nope, all GTS came from the factory with Cup 2.

I think I figured out what happened. Previous owner had the cf wheel option and ran those primarily, had a receipt transferring Cup 2's to those wheels. He must have bought these all-seasons to stick on the regular wheels. The tires look brand new, have almost no wear. I will burn these up and get PS4's.

I've seen 305's on a stock rear rim on the board with pics. I plan on that next. I have the 275's up front. No issue (with camber plates)

I'm running 265F and 295R. Would definitely like to go to 285F 305R, but not sure how fitment would be - definitely close to the limit on the fronts and somewhat close to the limit on the rears.

A little more front tire would be great for this car though, especially when you see what the competition is using (305/315 on GT350R for example).

Do you mind posting pics of the 305 rear setup?

They're posted here on the board by someone else. I'm getting those after my next track day.

I switched from PSC2 to PS4S as well. There's a very pronounced impact on comfort for sure. It's very welcome to offset the GTS's sometimes punishing street ride.

That being said, if I knew Michelin strongly opposed their use I would have not done so. OP, did they tell you why they advise against this?

Just a Michelin dealer trying to upsell the Cup 2 tires. PS4S are perfectly fine - my car has had them on for 30k+ miles.

PS4S are perfect. They will not let you down. From my friends and my personal experiences, these are longlasting and robust tyres.

No to be honest their customer service which used to be exemplary is now pretty poor. BMW say you must only fit star rated tyres! I hope they bring out a star rated tyre for the fronts. Cheers.
