Carbon Fiber Brakes - sides and vanes oxidation

For those with Carbon Ceramic Brakes, review this picture carfully. While this picture is a Porsche rotor, the same technology is used on BMW.

Beginning at 420 degrees Celsius, carbon fibers oxidize and burn away. The friction layer protects the disc's wear surfaces, but not the sides. Brembo SGL applies an "anti-oxidation coating" to the sides and inside the vent channels to prevent this. If this coating is not properly applied (defect in manufacturing) or the disc is overheated, the results can be seen in the picture.

What to notice?

The disk is a CCBH type (carbon fiber with hard friction layer as seen on Porsche after 2012, AMG and BMW) and the friction layer area is still qualified for refurbishing. But the non friction layer is destroyed and the disk is not salvageable.

This is unfortunate because this could have been prevented by knowing that there is alternative to buying a new disk.

contact me directly if you have specific question.

Carbon fiber brakes, also known as carbon ceramic brakes or simply carbon brakes, are high-performance braking systems commonly used in high-end sports cars, supercars, and racing vehicles. These brakes utilize carbon fiber-reinforced ceramic composites, which offer several advantages over traditional iron or steel brakes.

Lot’s of progress is being done at reusing Carbon Ceramic disks. Unlike cast iron, the kind of CCB that BMW is using has a friction layer that protect the core disk. This friction layer can be rebuilt and bring the disk back to as good as new.

if you have a carbon ceramic disk that is worn out, either via the wear indicators or minimum thickness. feel free to contact me with questions.

Disk with a warn out friction layer vs a new friction layer.

Notice the stress fractures on the new refurbished disk vs the worn out disk

Do you have an approximate cost of refurbishing the M3/4 rotors so it can be compared to a new set?

What is the approximate turnaround time?
Disclaimers?
All M3/4 CCBs or only certain model years?

Rebrake refurbish all CCBs from all years.
The condition of the disk is more important than the year. In general, cost is less than half of new.
