Chips

Who hates chips? Rock chips that is. Being that my car is frozen white it creates more of a dilemma for me. It’s hard to match or repair any stone chips. PPF is an option but in my area the quality of installers is poor. Right now I run Xpel track tape on the front for short interstate trips etc but I’ve still managed to rack up up a few small ones. At 4800 miles I’ve resolved myself to get PPF on the front when I can find a good installer and just roll with some Dr. Colorchip In brilliant white metallic for any other chips I get. I would have never spent the money required for a full PPF on this car. What do some of you do in regards to this issue?

Even PPF isn't immune to a rock that hits just right.

I had a small rock hit at an angle that impacted the PPF and caused a ripple and small tear under the film.

Now I'm concerned that when I remove the film to change from this crappy 3m film to expel that it might cause a bigger tear.

Good call on the flaps. I’m just not sure how I like them aesthetically. The jury is still out.

None of the chips on the hood would have been caused by rocks kicked up from your own car. The flaps will only protect the sides of your car and perhaps other cars around you.

Embrace the chips
Cars are meant to be driven and will have imperfections.
In my mind every chips tells a story.

Why spend $ on PPF - you’ll just preserve the paint for the next owner and you’ll never get they money back.
Small rock chips, if noticed, will cost you maybe $500 when you haggle. Don’t worry. Enjoy the car

Always wise advise Tommy. What’s the mileage on yours now? Any plans to replace it with the next toy?

You cant be serious...

An owner has PPF because he doesnt like to look at rock chips while washing his own car, he takes pride in protecting his own possessions, and YES, PPF will hold value to the car overall.

Take an m4 with a PPF job and an identical M4 with no PPF and 5 years of driving...the one with PPF will easily sell for more than the one without ppf because the unprotected one will need a bumper respray, hood respray, fenders resprayed, side mirrors will be toast, and headlights will likely need a refinishing and reseal. all that is avoided with $2k in film application, you maintain factory paint that matches the rest of the car, and its 1 to 2 days of downtime compared to 1 week or more to have the front end repainted.

Besides cost, there is ZERO downside to PPF. If you bought a 80K car, 2k to protect the front end and hold its value is well worth it!

(please dont introduce the accident scenario here as its rare....rock chips are 100% going to happen)

Sure a 10K full body is over the top, but a 6500k makes sense. It will cost 8-12k to repaint an M properly. Yes, there are the 3k full repaints, but I'd think twice about that, just like I would think twice about a 1200-1400 full front film install from some new pop up shop....

While they serve the purpose, and there is a limited design ability here, they just dont fit the look of the M. Subaru wrx, absolutely. The BMW M, nope.

Form vs function. nailed the function end of things quite well! Form, not so much, but also not much else can be done...the design of the car doesnt fit well with mud flaps

Got my car full ppf'ed probably the best "mod" I've done. Saved me quite a few times from major rock chips cart hits kid scratches purse dings and tree sap. Wish I could have it on every car, cost is worth it to me.

I have full front end ppf, but the bumper was pretty jacked prior to install. The ppf now has some little gouges in it too. I do think it’s worth it, but I wonder if it will actually pay out in terms of resale when you factor in opportunity cost. The reality is that if you drive a car, it will get hit by debris. No way around it. Also, I think the overall appearance (well maintained paint) is far more impactful than small imperfections. My car has some chips above and below the ppf, but you can’t see them unless you examine it pretty close up. People that look at it think it looks perfect. I think your plan sounds fine.

Well said although it's hard advice to follow.

I cringe when I see a rock chip on my bumper, but I cringe even harder when someone pays for full PPF on a lease.

You can always look at a middle of the road option...

I went with a PPF install on the nose, rockers and rear bumper, so the lower areas that receive more hits are protected, it was only $1000 in my area, probably even cheaper in the states...

and as a few have mentioned, drive it and don't worry about the chips overall, it's meant to be driven

It's a car I drive everyday
It'll pick up bird doodoo , sap pollen rock chips
It'll inevitably run over mysterious fluids, some possible hooman since I'm in the bay area
Best part is if I get tired of it I can always get something new

One thing to keep in mind is that the earlier you have PPF installed, the better it will look. I once had it installed on a vehicle that had a good number of chips and it made them stick out like sore thumbs...
