Ever since I did that, I have not had a single problem with the scraping noise, so yeah, rather than waste your time going to the dealer and hoping for a fix from BMW, just do a 5 min DIY procedure.

I second that. The pot hole repair in the NY/NJ/CT area is off the hook. Those little pieces of gravel get caught behind the heat shield constantly causing that scraping sound. I had one of my wheels off yesterday clearing it out for the third time in a month. Word of advice when you're doing it. Not only pull the heat shield away so that the offending piece of gravel will drop out but, also check on top. There is a little crease or, valley where small bits of gravel can collect.

The single worst thing about this car
So I've had my car for almost 2 years and 20k miles. It's been awesome. Pretty much problem free except for one thing... The damn "rock in the wheel" that noise is horrible! And can stay for days and in my latest case weeks ?

That's sucks man. Have you tried going in there w your hands and pushing the shields away from the rotors? The rocks usually drop out after that and the noise is gone. Well known issue w these cars. Ive read a thread about how there's supposed to be a tsb fix w new dust shields but don't think it's in full swing. The CCB issue is worse w the rocks getting stuck between the rotor and wheel and cutting grooves into the inner barrels of the rim. Bad designs all together

I left my girl with them for a few days and got her back and I have had this rock issue since. I think the 2016 cars have this fixed already, it's the first year adopters that have to deal with it now.

Regardless there should be a service bulletin for this on F80/F82.

Yup, pretty exhaustive thread on this too (for those of you new to the forums and/or car.....
It's been around since the beginning, and only marginally improved with the new brake shields. Problem still exists, however..... http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1052226

I haven't had one since I got the updated shields installed. And the reason they don't tell you about the SB is because the bulletin requires them to install new bearings which obviously costs $$$$.

Yours is quiet. This was mine a month after picking up my car. I have since had the service bulletin done, and haven't had as big of a problem, but rocks still get stuck in there from time to time.

Well if that's the worst thing, that's not too bad.
Just push the little heat shield thing back a bit - rock almost always just falls right out.

I've had some pretty loud experiences with mine, always in the rear. If I can stop and get out I will and bend the heat shield away from the rotor. If I can't get out I just grin and bear it, it usually goes away relatively quickly.

I've had mine done but occasionally I'll still get rocks caught in the brake shields. Super annoying and frustrating. It doesn't always happen but when it does it's annoying lol

had the rock issue once. but it must have fallen out, noise only lasted a few seconds, thankfully! I read so much about it here on the forum that when it happened I knew exactly what it was. why not pull over and give the dust shield a lil tap and the rock should fall out?
