Emissions test with JB4

I bought an M4 that has the JB4 S55 system on it and wonder if there is anything I need to do when I take it for emissions testing (in Illinois).

The seller told me to…

"Change to map 0 and then unplug OBD connection. This will bypass the JB4 and go back to factory tuning. Plug it back in when done and return to map 2."

Just want to be sure this correct and that it won’t un-do anything.

It also has this exhaust…

he mentioned that…

"I’m not sure how the downpipes will effect the test. You could reinstall the factory ones temporarily. If you do, you will have to run map 1 while the factory downpipes are on. Map 2 requires the aftermarket downpipes."

Naturally, I am hopeful that I won’t have to do that and am wondering if anyone has a few minutes to clear this up for me and let me know your views. This is all foreign to me.

You need to put the original downpipe back in before smog test. And right now ur not getting check engine light because jb4 is set to auto delete code. Once you put the original downpipe in you have to drive it around for like 30miles or so before going in for a test. The akrapovic downpipe u got on is catless and stock has cat. Jb4 map 0 and unplug obd plug.

All u need to know about jb4

Here in CA I think they don't require smog checks for new cars (upto 6 years old).

Talk to a shop and get an emissions waiver.

bottom line is you have to reinstall factory downpipes or weld in HiFlow cats into your catless downpipes in order to pass emissions (in map 0 or with the jb4 unplugged) in most states. This is a fact.

After welding in HFC's, they would also have to be at least 400 cel cats along w/ 02 sensor spacer(s) (probably post cat) in order to trick the exhaust stream readings by the ECU. again the emission test would have to be in map 0 or totally disabled.

JB4 combos that run catless will never be in a factory ready state because they are constantly running loop code that will not allow the readiness codes to complete their cycle. that is why you have no cel with downpipes. Essentially the car will never be in a factory "ready state". Even w/o JB4 if you are catless, you will most likely not pass in many states. check you local emission testing laws.

It's already proven to work on the N54's AND N55's. And the company claims it will/and has worked on the S55 as well. Yes I believe they are spliced in. A real game-changer for those not wanting to worry about emission testing again with their cat-less DP's...

Thats not a bad route either in MD if you got a connect. But this solution will eliminate that problem indefinitely without anymore hassles as it keeps your ECU reading a correct "steady state" feedback to pass the OBDII test... no need setting your CEL delete on either as you won't legitamentally get one.

When you have downpipes, the car will throw a code. The JB4 is setup to delete the codes right away so you never see the code. When you disable to JB4 to go for emissions, the code will return and you will not pass.

You need the BMW computer to think you have stock downpipes. You either reinstall the stock downpipes or you try the mini cat / O2 simulators which try to trick the BMW computer into thinking you have stock downpipes.

Bottom line is you will have to do something in order to pass any type of emissions test.

What year is your vehicle? You don't need to test it until 4 it's four years old.

Only folks from Illinois should really chime in here since each state is different as mentioned. California should definitely not comment.
Its a 2015 M4

I wasn't aware that this was even possible. Any shop can do this? Any requirements?
