That setting makes no sense. Why have driver and passenger temp settings if you are going to add a third option in the middle? Totally makes sense in the rear.

Agreed. I'll never see the value in having that thumbwheel, particularly when you also have setting temps. But once I figured it out, I just put it on blue and left it there.

I'd say the a.c. is average at best. When it is really hot I turn temp down to 60 and have to have fan on full to stay comfortable

It is all the way on blue and it takes forever to cool down. It gets cold but after like 5 minutes. My gfs car is instant cold right away.

Like some others here, I'd say the AC is pretty average. On mine, using the "Auto" function, it seems to take a while to cool down a hot car, but keeps it cool nicely. My prior '11 Audi S4 had fantastic AC, especially in "Auto" mode, and could get the car cool very quickly but then adjust itself to temperature. We used to have an F10 550i, and I think that had better AC than the F80 M3.

It's unbelievably cold. Easily the strongest AC I've had in a while.

We've had high 90s days here with the heat index into 105+ and after about 10 minutes I have to turn it down. It gets really, really cold.

Granted, I have tint too, but the AC is just as much a beast as the car

The AC was working great until it stopped blowing at 5am this morning. Now my month old M3 is in the shop and I am driving an 528i loaner. I'm so pissed I didn't even go into the office....

Once you figure out the thumb wheel, you'll wonder why all cars don't have them. Yes, I agree, when it's hot, it needs to be full blue. But when it's cold and you need heat, one blue will give you a refreshing slightly cooler stream of air to your face than the warm air to your feet. (I assume you realize that the thumb wheel only affects the upper vents). Also on cooler days when you need just a little cooling, full blue will produce air that is far too cold. One red dot warms the air just slightly and is more comfortable.

A warning: if you put the wheel at full red during heating season, once the cabin comes to set temperature, the upper vents will continue to pump out hot air while the lower vents will put out cold air to try to maintain the set temperature.

On the AC power: I'm in Alabama and just a push of the MAX button for a minute or two when parked in the summer sun cools things down very rapidly. Setting the fan speed to the second of the automatic fan speed ranges is very comfortable in AUTO mode on the hottest days to maintain the cabin temperature.

To me it makes much more sense to set the temp and forget it - no manual adjusting of fan speeds or thumbwheels. There should be no need to adjust anything other than temp and the fan speed and blower air temp should work off that one setting. If you are too hot or too cold - just adjust the temp.or set things manually without using the temp.

Like I said earlier, the a/c works fine. But I would prefer to have the ability to set the temp and forget it.

It's a very good AC system in my experience.

Not quite to the same level as my '16 Accord EX-L which is maybe a third of the cost....but still, gets cold fast

Thanks for this thread. Now I understand the A/C a bit better! In my M5 and Z4M, the "auto" mode controls the fan speed as well, so I was expecting the same in the M3. I wonder why this is not the case? Seems strange to have an "auto" mode that requires one to adjust the fan speed.

Actually it does control the fan speed. In auto mode, adjusting the fan speed actually selects the RANGE of automatic fan speeds that the system uses.

Thanks for the clarification.
