I had the "fix" done by my dealer, and for my case it did lessen the sound, but it's still there.

I think I'm going to wait to take it in until they come up with a real fix. Makes me wonder if the driveshafts were balanced in production...surely they were. Maybe something else in the driveline is throwing them off.

Does anyone have an update on this issue? I have been waiting to take it to the dealer for this until there is a more permanent fix.
My wife's F80 does not have this issue but mine still does. I have to wonder if there are variances in the driveshaft balancing that is causing this for only some of us. |

No fix but I've got it. Annoying as hell.

I took mine in for the "fix" mentioned earlier and while that did lessen the noise, it's still there. I wonder if the only real fix for this is to replace the driveshaft with a better balanced one..

I still haven't taken mine in for this. I was going to bring it up during my next service. Hoping in the meantime there is a better fix and not the bracket bending.

The dealer has worked on mine twice. While it is better it is still there under heavy acceleration in 2nd gear.
The good news is that I don't hear it with my helmet on, with the windows down, on the track, trying to hit my marks.

Sounds more to me like the shield above the driveshaft rattling on the body, or the ecable tunnel rattling on the shield.
Have any techs tried putting felt tape on the contact points between the shield and the body, or the ecable tunnel and the shield? (ex-BMW tech here). |

I've asked my dealership to order another driveshaft to try. It doesn't seem like all the M3/M4s are having this problem so I'm betting its a balance issue.

I ended up taking mine in for the second oil service (one after the break-in service) and notified them of the issue. They appeared to have resolved it by adjusting the piece that was rubbing. I really feel like the driveshaft needs to be replaced for me to be comfortable years from now.
The paperwork says: C/S There is a grinding spun on second gear customer was told that the driveshaft is hitting something. SIB 26 02 14 Defect Code: 34 41 07 39 00 LO: 18 00 018 LO: 34 99 000 Removed exhaust and adjusted parking brake tube W/T to adjust right side parking brake(3) |

Were you able to get a new driveshaft? Did it solve the issue? I want to have my dealer do the same if this will fix it.

This is exactly why I don't like getting first year M cars, there's always something off like this. I wonder if P-car owners have similar issues first / second year cars.

Finally got mine fixed today. It took it in last week, and after a day in the shop they said it was fixed. But it wasn't, so I took it back, and after another 2 days in the shop they were able to remedy it. Part of the problem is that it takes HEAVY acceleration to happen, so the techs who drove the car normal would report that there was no sound. The eventual fix was ordering a new e-brake "tube" and bending that one far out of the way, and somehow widening the housing for the drive shaft a bit. They said this affects manuals much worse than DCT because of the ability to put power down, but I cannot confirm. They said it was the squat from heavy accel that pushed things close enough together to make the rattle. If anyone in the Seattle area needs it fixed, talk to Ludee at BMW Bellevue, as he was the one who personally verified that the fix worked. Good luck!
