No resolution yet? I'm on the fence and don't want to inherit an HPFP-style problem...

I'm taking it in to get this fixed on Saturday. I'm guessing it will be a fairly straightforward repair, I'll post with the results.

It isn't a repair. It is a band-aide. The problem still exists. Strap a go pro under your car and watch that drive shaft do the mamba.
BMW told me they don't know why it is happening yet and they don't have a fix.

This is the exact sound that has been driving me crazy for the past 2 months. I thought that I was the only one that had it...could not find a thread with others complaining about it.

Well, if it mended the issue, then it would be a repair by definition. But anyways, I took my car in this weekend and they did the service bulletin's suggestions, and it certainly reduced the sound, but it is still there on WOT 2nd gear pulls. It's cold and icy here in Seattle, and this sound only happens if I keep full grip, so it's more difficult to test. I will do some more pulls tonight and see if it's any less likely to occur now.

Curious, does this happen for you all when you get wheel hop? I had three other passengers in my M4 and had this happen under hard acceleration, except I had serious wheel hop.

I have never experienced wheel hop in my M3, so no. Mine always seems to happen when accelerating hard in 2nd gear, under full traction in MDM mode (the car tends to break loose in back with the nannies off and accelerating hard in 2nd and 3rd).

No, the techs showed it to me on their laptop. They sent the footage off to BMW. I don't have a copy.

Yep, that's it!!! BMW never tested anything before production release. All those camoflaged pictures on the track and streets two years before release were all just a scam.

Must have been rigorous since they can't troubleshoot their own creation right now. Even I've experienced the scraping noise at low speeds (another prevalent issue separate from this thread) - another issue they don't have an answer for. |

Have you accelerated close to redline, using full throttle in 2nd gear?

I have zero issues at 4200 miles and lots of redlining and different situations. I have never had driveshaft knock. I have had rear end noises, but they are just that: noises. On a car with a rear diff the engineers said was noisy. On a production line known for noisy diffs.
So I don't consider that an issue.

I've got the exact same issue. I thought it was gear grinding inside the trans. I tried to get a video today and couldn't hear it in the video but the one shared earlier is exactly what is happening.
I scheduled an appointment to bring it in but I might just try the fix myself as I really don't trust other hands on the car. Anyone that has had the dealer do the "fix" have any feedback after miles of driving? |
