The finance manager told me it was tuned down after I finished the purchase paperwork.
This must be some widespread rumor.

I just had my 1200 mile service. i put it in M2 and hit it coming off of a side street on to a main road just like have done many times before. Usually it sticks to the road as it starts out, then gives you that kick in the pants once the power kicks in. Maybe it's the placebo effect, but even with DSC on (I never turn it off - the tires are too expensive), it broke loose and seemed to accelerate faster. This was a city street, so I took my foot off of the pedal at 60, but it did seem like there was more low end power to me.

I'm doing a highway trip tomorrow, so I'll see what it feels like when you hit it at highway speeds.

Funny I ran across this thread. Picked mine up today and noticed the lacking low end grunt. Car gets up to speed real fast though. Can't wait for 1200 mile service so I can let loose al little..

My SA gave me this line as well. The only thing I noticed after the 1200 mile service was that they forgot to reset the 'service needed in 1200 miles' -- unless there is a 2400 mile service :-)

Does the 1200 mile service show on the service record in the electronic record in the idrive, if not could impact on the future saleability of the car.

My Service Manager said same thing... "100hp more after the 1200 mile service... blaa blaa blaa". I called BS in my mind. Just got the car back, what a huge difference in first 3 gears. Didn't have chance to try higher ones but at least those lower gears were definitely limited - now it just wants to burn the rear tires. You can also hear the turbos much more clearly now.

Best service ever...

Thumbs down

I was told the same thing by my SA as well. It seems like misinformation to me. Many incompetent dealers would forgot to "tune it up" if there was such a thing. Just look at how many are forgetting to even record the 1200 mile service in the idrive system!!

Having come from another M I took my genius for a ride and taught him a few thing or twos.

The SA that catered to my car in France for the first service during our ED told me the same thing. "Be careful, now you have the full power released, we removed the restriction" or something to that effect.

I think this urban legend has roots in the days of the E60 M5. On that car, in "Normal" mode, the S85 was limited to 400ps, while the fulll 507ps were available when "Sport" mode was engaged. IIRC, "Sport" mode was disabled before the "break-in" service.

My CA said the same thing. I guess next week I get to experience the full power of this beast.

Wait, except for snow covered roads and snow tires. Guess I still have to wait until May.

I had planned on driving my car to FL this week but we ended up taking the X. Anyway when i was contacting dealers to see about doing my break in down here I saw one of them mention this as well. Maybe he didnt realize my car is 6mt and was talking about launch control. I dont know.

"The service itself mostly consists of an oil change with the required inspections, a differential service and “waking up” the vehicles control units to allow the vehicle to operate with all the performance it was intended to. "

Friend dyno'd his new M4 a day after he purchased and the dyno numbers seemed to be the same as other M's with more mileage. He then added Jb4 that same day, along with DPs.

What break in?

Any chance this is something they started doing mid production? I got to 200 miles on mine today and tried a few Sport+ runs through the gears to 5500rpm and it's impressive but not "nauseatingly fast". I suppose the magic could all be above 5500rpm, and it did break traction, but I would almost prefer it if BMW would software limit the revs and power for break in so I didn't have to lift off the throttle all the time.

I too am curious as to the validity of this claim... seems the same information was being pushed around one of the local dealerships in my area.

Side note - my NES still works and I've got Contra! I actually have my NES plugged into my TV (flat panel, not CRT) and sitting on top of the cable box LOL.

I just dont think this car feels fast even tho it is. Maybe some of the numb comments are from this. I like you expected the big boost surge that never comes cause it hits down low. But when you look at speedo youre flying. I have a hard time keeping this car at speed limit.

Perhaps, but the numbers don't lie. You can't do 0-60 in under 4 seconds and not "feel fast". Either way, if it's roasting tires in 1st and 2nd with TC off then there's more acceleration to be "felt" if you can make it hook up. Maybe some 295/30's out back would be a good start. I'm sure the stock wheels can handle that. We'll see. I'm taking it slow and easy on the break in so I won't be able to actually romp on it for a few weeks.

Absolutely, the magic starts at 5500rpm, that is where the power plateau starts. Always keep it above 5500rpm for max acceleration. Actually, most dyno runs show that power even keeps increasing up to ~6000rpm (depending on which dyno is used). So yes, you need to keep it up there in the revs to get the most out of the engine.

That being said, the S55 pulls so effortlessly at low RPM that it does not "feel" fast in that range.

Cool. Well I'm back to efficient mode for the rest of the break in. The manual says no "full load", which to me is way more important than the RPM restriction. I honestly do wish BMW would just restrict the thing digitally until 1200 miles so you could drive like normal without wondering if you're effecting longevity or efficiency, so this thread is interesting to me. I would love to find out they implemented an actual boost and throttle position restriction (not just launch control inactive) that gets removed at 1200 miles.

I suspect longevity from break-in abuse will likely only matter (if it is even real which is a hot debate) for the next owner of most of these cars Not many will keep this car longer than 5 years and you would have to beat the crap out of the car to kill it within the first 5.

Yeah, valid. I'm probably going to buy an extended warranty (instead of paying CA sales tax again) when the time comes, and drive mine for 8 or 9 years. Still, whether it's a covered repair or not, I'd rather not have it in the shop all the time.
