Oil catch can - BMS or Mishimoto

Thinking of getting either Mishimoto or BMS oil catch can. Does anyone know which occ is easier to empty out?

Seems the BMS can be emptied without removing strut brace. Is this possible with the Mishimoto?

The BMS seems to rub against the radiator hose is this the same with Mishimoto?

Trying to weight the pros and cons between the 2 (besides price).

Thanks

I have the BMS one. I touches the (intercooler) coolant hose, but it doesn’t put pressure on it or anything. I can’t imagine that anyone would go through the trouble of trying to drain it without removing the CF brace. Unless you have a drain hose, it’s a lot of close finagling for not much benefit. Removing the cf brace takes what, 3 minutes?

I'm in the same boat. If I don't have to unscrew the strut brace which isn't hard. I just don't want to put additional wear the aluminum threads if I don't have to.

I empty the BMS OCC with the strut brace on, just loosen the one bolt holding the OCC bracket to the chassis and you can rotate it over to unscrew the can from the bottom to empty.

Do you also have to detach that connecting hose (in addition to removing that bolt) before rotating it?

I have the BMS can installed as well and empty it much in the same way. The hoses are all pretty flexible, so once you have the mounting bolt loosened up it's relatively easy to adjust.

Mind you it does take a little "finesse" to work around the strut brace, but it's one of the few instances you don't need a double jointed five year old with the grip strength of Macho-Man Randy Savage to get the job done.

Do any of these catch cans actually catch oil with the S55? I haven't seen pictures where there is a substantial amount of oil caught due to the efficiency of the S55 PCV system. My N54 on the other hand runs dual catch cans and catches a LOT of oil w/plugged head ports.

I have the mishimoto OCC and attached a drain hose. It also increases the capacity but you have to go under the car to drain it.

The BMS OCC has an 1/8" NPT port at the bottom for people who want to attach a drain but I think if I was going to do it I'd setup the drain to go back to the oil pan so it was a zero maintenance can!

Mishimoto sells a kit. I did have to modify the adapter piece that screws under the can. When screwed all the way in, it is higher than the bottom of the floor of the inside of the can, so the oil has to pool up before it can drain to the hose. Its made of plastic and i was able to shorten the threads. https://www.mishimoto.com/compact-ba...drain-kit.html
Im very happy with the quality of the mishimoto products.

Its funny cause thats what the PCV/CCV is suppose to do but on my car i can see small pools of oil build up at the ends of hoses during the OCC installation. My plan is to drain it every oil change. I also like the fact it can trap moisture/liquids from the crankcase for me to drain since i live in the north east.

I dont mind meeting up if you are ever around Bay Ridge. Car is currently on jackstands. Just got done doing the differential bushings and im just waiting for parts to come in to put back the exhaust. I can also take some pics of the engine bay if that helps. Theres no fitment issues except one of the hoses is tight against the stock intake box.

If you have every mishimoto product, you might as well get the OCC. It really is a nice looking piece and it actually has a brass filter compared to only baffles in the BMS and turner units. That was one of the reasons i went with the mishimoto one.

Hey hC1001, also ordered the Mishimoto OCC and petcock drain kit (arriving Monday), do you have any pics that show where you routed your drain tube, and where you secured it? (I assume zip-ties?)

Thanks in advanced.

I snaked it inbetween the subframe. Its nice and snug, no zipties. Here are some pics to help you out.

Mishimoto oil catch can and petcock drain kit arrived.
I didn’t own a heat gun before, but it appears one is needed to remove the connections on the stock PCV tubing to transfer to the Mishimoto tubing.

There is one slight hiccup I noticed while mocking up the parts. The petcock tube is larger than the drain tube opening in the OCC. I ordered the one recommended for the F8X M3 OCC - so they may have sent me the wrong kit. I sent them an email and hope it can get corrected shortly. Otherwise it’s a great unit, and i’m excited to install it.

Im sorry to hear that. I doubled checked the part # for the drain hose i bought and linked above. MMBCC-Drain-02

Are you talking about the barb that screws under the can? The barb you got looks different than the one i have and the pics on their site i linked. Mine is plastic. It looks like you have an aluminum barb. Mishimotos support has been great to me in the past, im sure they will correct it.

Whats the heatgun for? I didnt need a heatgun. Just used a razor to remove the end fittings from the stock plastic tube. Dont cut too much or you might cut the O-ring on the end fitting.
