Carbon Brakes on M3/4

Pros/Cons?

Anyone purchased?

Maintenance costs thru 50,000 mile window vs regular brakes?

I suspect the consensus will be that if you need carbon brakes, you would already know and not need to ask it here.

I also believe that they are not covered by BMW free maintenance, so there is a cost vs the standard brakes.

There is no maintenance cost as they last about 100k miles and then at that point you will need new rotors and pads which currently cost like 4k each rotor. I'm sure the price will come down by that time or you may no longer even have the car and it will be the next owners problem haha

I have them, and they are awesome. They look amazing, and work super well. Also, I wont have to ever change them in my time with the car. Further, they do not release any brake dust, so wheels always look sharp. Only downside is you can't go smaller than 19" rims for the winter...

Worth it IMO.

a little, there are plenty of rather heated threads on the topic

My take:
  • They look good
  • They feel good
  • They make very little brake dust
  • They will likely outlive the car with exclusive street use (no maintenance cost)
  • They reduce unsprung weight for improved handling
  • They offer a marginal (meaning rather small) reduction of rotating mass
  • They offer no advantage in braking distances with street use
  • They are rather expensive
  • They can be noisy, especially when cold (squealing)
  • They offer less bite when cold and/or wet (which can be scary)
  • They offer the ability to go from street to track without having to change the pads
  • They offer better resistance to fade at the track, stock for stock
  • They offer similar resistance to fade at the track vs irons with track pads
  • They are cost prohibitive for frequent track use

They work great on dry weather, but SUCK when they get wet and the temperature comes down. My M4 is my toy car that rarely gets driven in the rain, but the times that I have done that it has been pretty scary. You have to keep touching the brakes every so often to keep the temperature within the operating range.

I haven't had any trouble or lack of braking in the wet in both my m3 and m4 gts. I also have not had any major squ ealing noises either.

No need for over kill if you plan on using your M for daily commuting use.

The performance in wet weather is a bit shocking when you experience it the first time. Once you understand it, they are manageable. I live in South Florida where it rains a lot and have gotten used to them.

As others stated, many threads on CCBs already....

...and way to expensive for regular track use. Sort of an oxymoron IMO

This is not true. I live in Chicago, so I know all about rain/snow here. Never had one issue...

Exactly. I'm a CCB owner and I'd only recommend them if you WEREN'T going to track the car. Basically 8k for looks and no brake dust. That's a hard pill to swallow.

I've had quite a few eye-opening experiences coming off the highway in the rain/cold after a few miles without using the brakes only to find out there's zero pedal there. Just part of CCB ownership.

It's quite peculiar though, because the CCBs were the biggest waste of money and the worst option on F8X's before the GTS's came out. So now that they GTS's derivative are out, no one has said a word about replacement costs or practicality? I believe they aren't exactly the same but they must've been retooled to be drastically cheaper to replace and last much longer under track use? If I had a dollar for every time I read that PCar owners take their CCBs off when they get them because of replacement costs. Kudos to BMW for making the GTS's derivative longer lasting.

The CCB on the GTS is exactly the same as regular M3/4 except for different rear brake pads and maybe programming. There are 3 guys I know that tracks their GTS and not one of them complains or worry about the cost of replacing them.

If anyone with a GTS was worried about the cost of replacement, they can buy the direct swap iron rotors from racingbrakes. But so far, I have not seen or heard of anyone doing so.

Wait until they get at ~40+ track days

he is from vancouver, there really aren't any decent road course there that can test limit of brakes on these cars.

Yup just pads and biasing on the GTS. There was a reason MCCB was ultimately chosen to be fitted as standard. Still working on the info package (it's going to take some time) but it's the same reason why USA BMW Driving Experience cars are the only ones running MCCB. All other locations in the world use the Iron M-Compound with M Performance Pads.

When it's presented, I think everyone will see the depth and significant amount of work going into this project that has gone global.

Got CCBs on mine, no squeal at all, however I do still experience brake fade after heavy driving (I live in the mountains). Planning on changing the brake fluid to see if that would solve my issues. 5000km on mine, and have never heard any squeal

Can you describe the fade you are experiencing?
