As enthusiasts shouldn't we be more concerned about the vehicles performance then the sound?

No.

I developed into an enthusiast for subjective/emotional reasons. Hearing my favorite cars going through the gears, winding out to redline is one of them.

Be concerned with whatever you want to be concerned with.

All that being said, i'll probably be buying one in the next year or so, but i'm not sure i'll be selling my e92 at the same time!
+1, that's my plan as well. I'm holding off until LCI, but I plan to keep the E92.

Is it just me, or does this sound completely different than the Gintani video? I thought that sounded really good, and I didn't hear that much rasp. I think this sounds terrible unfortunately, but I thought the stock M3/4 sounds much better IRL.

Sound is just as important as performance to a real enthusiast. Its the whole experience that adds to the enthusiasm.

I agree but the fact is almost everyone thats heard the f80/f82 in person say it sounds great. Yes the v8 might sound better but this is the future guys accept it and stop trying to justify keeping your E90 which is a great performance car by bashing the f80 every chance you get.

Thank you!

What is the consensus on needing a tune of some kind to have these run right?

Why would anyone stop bashing the F8x if they feel like it!? It's a forum of discussion and the purpose of it is not to show only the bright side of cars. The fact is that the F8x is a disapointment for many enthousiast because it sound very poor compared to other M cars, and the forums are the best way to let BMW know of that disapointment!

And by the way, even if the future is in turbo engines, that does'nt mean they need to sound like shit!

I think people that have NOT heard the car IRL should stop bashing.

I personally think the S55 sounds as good as any other I6 cars. Stock for stock, I think it definitely sounds better than the S54 to be honest. So if that's the case, I don't think it can be called a disappointment by any means (which was subjective to begin with)

I'm sure E46 owners felt the same way about the E90 at first.

The reason I'm calling it a disapointment is only because people always expect a new car to get better in every department then the previous model, so in that regard, how can someone say it's not a disapointment!? Not only it does'nt sound as good as the S65(which was expected) but it does'nt even sound specially good!

I know you like the sound, but I still believe that videos don't lie(I bought six exhaust systems based on youtube clips and always got what I expected), and it's not like there's only one or two poor quality videos to judge from, we've seen many many good quality videos and it's always the same thing, a sound that is less then pleasing from the exterior and almost too loud to be real from the interior.

Also I don't think that the E46 vs F8x stock sound comparaison means much, other then maybe the fact that 15 years ago, most cars came with a tame exhaust note, even the E9x was too tame for most enthousiast. IMO what's really important is how awsome the engine can sound with the right exhaust, and from what we've seen with the Akra and the M Perf, it seems like the S55 don't even have the capacity to sound awsome with an aftermarket exhaust!
Hopefully I'm wrong on this one, but we'll see!

Anyway, all I'm saying is that it's good that people are bashing on the F8x(to certain extend) because that way, BMW will know what they need to do with the next M3/M4, and maybe even with the M2!
