ECU software upgrade issues
Hi to everyone,
i have 2015 BMW M3 F80 with about 3000 miles (Stock-no mods). Last Friday i got check engine light, so i took my car to BMW dealer. Service manager told me that it was software bug issue so, They perform software updated. It took them about 3 hrs for software update. finally i got my car back.... original version: F020-14-11-502 New update version: F020-16-03-501 what i noticed In both sports and comfort mode exhaust sounds different for original sound. i hear lots of metallic rattling noise coming from exhaust. i hear turbo valves adjusting when i first turn on the car (i am not sure if its normal), all i know that i didn't here this before update. has anyone experience these issues after upgrade? if so, what has been done fix it? I have asked BMW dealer that it doesn't sound like my original car so they need revert change back. (Which they don't know how too). Please help. |

Could the "metallic rattling" be more pops/burbles? Sounds like you were updated with 2016 software, that changed the exhaust note a little. Don't think you can change it back...

Rattling as in metallic exhaust valve rattling out back, or rattling on the inside?...more pops between upshifts?

Interesting and kind of exciting at the same time.
I too wonder if the OP is confusing the 'rattling' with burbles. I am going in for my 1200 service this week and I am going to make sure they look for software updates.

Does anyone have a link to what the updated software does?

Patches and updates can sometimes make more problems than they cure when applied to older software packages. I tend to leave well enough alone unless its a critical update. Have had a few done in the past that I regretted after the fact with my last BMW.

I worry about the same.
If you had one of the original 335i with the N54, you know all about software update "fixes" and what can happen when BMW gets it wrong. They deployed new ECU code that destroyed the wastegate actuators by over-using and/or over-extending them (that's from memory, don't hang on my every word). The actuators were integral to the turbocharger, so replacing them was expensive. They eventually - after years of customer complaints - gave everyone a 100k mile warranty, but not before I had traded the car in with CEL ablaze, taking a hit for it. They also redesigned the actuators to be more robust, and of course rewrote the software to be less aggressive as well. Anyway, yeah, there was a characteristic wastegate rattle that accompanied the situation. Hopefully the OP's issue is something completely different. He says its coming from the "exhaust" rather than the engine compartment, so hopefully it is. |

Luckily it was all covered under warranty, the $ numbers were large, the frustration level, priceless!

Yeah, not that past is always prologue, but I would never own one of these out of warranty unless I had the skills to DIY. Good thing BMW has shaved a year off the warranty for the new year ahead!

i asked them to put old software back, but as per dealership manager its not possible even by there best tech. i have driven for now about 50 miles or so and i feel it made my car slower than before. no check engine lights or errors.

They didn't shave a year off the warranty. They are reducing the free maintenance by a year.

True, but for how long? They got tired of eating that first brake job, other wear parts(loosely defined) can't be far behind. In any event sorry for being misleading in my comment, good to get it clarified.
