Ok well that didn't work.
Tightening the collar bolt seemed to work for a week or two but the clicking sound came back this weekend when last weekend it was quiet. Not sure what it could be at this point because i've already replaced the top hat on the driver side already.

Mines been in the dealer about 8 times for this clicking now. They have replaced pretty much every single bolt on the front end suspension, together with:-
1. Wheel bearings 2. Wheel hubs 3. Wheel hub carriers 4. Installed friction discs 5. Cleaned hubs discs pads multiple times 6. Top mounts 7. Remove struts and springs reinstall reseat springs and struts The clicking that occurred over bumps is now totally gone however the clicking braking and at the very end of steering travel remains. Dealers have basically given up and now been advised by BMW the noise is normal. I have done some further testing and I'm now convinced the noise is somehow coming from the brakes. Specifically the retainer pins/springs. When stationery and turning the wheel I get a single click at the end of travel when turning the wheel. When performing the same turning of the wheel but with the brake pedal fully pushed down the noise disappears and there is absolutely no way to replicate it. Seems like perhaps the pad is slightly loose in the caliper. New pad retainer springs or new pads should sort it. Before anyone tries any more of the more expensive fixes I would suggest looking at the brakes first. |

I had the same noise. No mechanic could find anything wrong.
Saw this post and gave that strut collar nut a try and it worked!! What I done is loosen that nut, put wd40 in that area and let it run and I put copper anti-seize gel and try to get it inside that area where the strut sits. Jacked up the arm from under to preload it while the nut is still loosen. Once strut is compressed enough l then tightened up to around 60nm torque + extra 1-2 turns. Let the arm down and then give it one more turn. Then noise completely gone! I had it on both sides and did both. |

Yeh BMW changed that strut pinch bolt on mine and they did identify it as a cause of a clicking noise. However mine still had a very intermittent click even after this and which I have narrowed down to being caused by the pads. For most however I would imagine that pinch bolt would sort it.

bumping this up and just wanted to say thanks Alan for following up on the issue and pin pointing it to the strut collar bolt. Probably 2 weeks after my MPHAS install, i have a "click" when stationary or close to stationary only from the front driver's side. Its not a repetitive clicking but 3-4 clicks while turning the wheel.
Going to "send" the collar bolt this weekend, and hopefully that resolves it. edit: just saw that you said the clicking came back - were you able to find a solution? |

While I was swapping my winter wheels back on last weekend I decided to try what another member did with adding some antiseize paste where the collar meets the shock.
I jacked up the car and loosen the strut collar bolt so I could slide the collar down about an inch. Cleaned the area and then lubed it up with copper antiseize paste where it clamps down. Tightened the bolt back up "full send" and the noise is completely gone again. Lets see how long it last this time....

These bolts are also single use (torque) bolts per BMW. Perhaps it might be worth getting a new bolt as the old one may have stretched too much (which is potentially why the 50ft/lb torque spec isnt sufficient? |

Yeah i've tried new and old bolts and sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't. Eitherway they are super cheap so might as well get new ones in your case.

tightened the (old) spindle bolt tonight. torqued it down to half a dozen ugga ugga's. noise is gone. let's see how long of a fix this lasts.
glad the sound was pinpointed and I didn't have to regrease top hat bearings or anything. |

two weeks in from my last fix and the clicking noise has not returned yet. I have a long road trip ahead so lets see if it stays quiet.

Changing the strut pinch bolt and retorquing to spec cured my click almost 100%. As mentioned above if you're still getting a click after that then do the brake test. Apply the footbrake and turn the wheel stationary. Then retest with the brake released. If it only clicks with the brake released its going to be a pad issue/retaining clip issue.

Thanks chaps! I was having the same creaking from the front after installing KW HAS kit. Just went out and gave that pinch bolt hell and first drive was creak free!

The pinch bolt fixed the clicking/creaking sound while turning the wheel either stationary or slow speeds. Alan

I had this same noise for a while. A couple of weeks ago I had ground control camber plates installed and the noise is gone. The stock top hat bearings seem pretty rough.
I think this resolved my issue. |

^^ sometimes when you install the top hats you inadvertently could have fixed the issue by removing the strut/pintch bolt during the process.
I replaced my 5K mile car with a new oem top hats just to have the noise come back within two weeks. My last attempt has been silent for months now (clean, coated with copper anti seize, full send pinch bolt tightness) Alan

Had the car in for a clunk/rattle noise on driver's front. Found the tie rod with excessive movement. Did the tie rod and TSB for friction discs and replaced a whole bunch of bolts as part of the TSB. Alignment was completed as well. Drove the car for a few weeks, alignment slightly off but now a click is heard turning full lock (stationary) either way. Bring it back, they now say the noise is from the dinan tension strut ball joint kit that they installed when I first picked the car up. Dinan covers the new set along with labor and alignment. Get a call that the noise is some what better but still there ... now it's the steering rack! Glad it's under warranty but...

Great thread. I installed Ohlins R&T (M2) 4wks ago and started getting the creaking/clicking noise a week ago whenever nearing full lock at carpark speeds.
Just one thing not mentioned, when I re-checked the Repair Manual for torque I had missed this spec, "Screw head must point in direction of travel". I had accidentally reversed this on the drivers side (where it sounded like most/all the noise was coming from), can't say it was the sole cause of my noise as after I re-installed it correctly I also torqued both sides to 70Nm (spec 56Nm). I hadn't replaced the nut/bolt either. Noise completely gone, if it returns will replace nut/bolt. |
