Interestingly enough, my Prada sunglasses can see the HUD no problem, whereas my Ray-Bans have issues seeing the HUD. They are both grey tinted polarized sunglasses.

LCDs use a linear polarizing filter allowing light to pass in only one axes as a result you wont find polarized sunglasses that will allow you to see the HUD at full brightness. This is why pilots don't use polarized lenses.
Technically you could rotate the polarized sunglass lenses such that the polarization aligns but doing so would defeat the benefit of polarized sunglasses (ie no longer would block the reflected sun off the road/water surface). Maui Jim Sunglasses are among the best lenses you can get...both in terms of the actual lens design and multiple filter layers. For those who wear progressive lenses, Maui Jims are second to none (they license the Autograph progressive lens by Shamir which can be highly customized). Serengeti sunglasses are also incredible. |

Unfortunately, for those of us who are somewhat older and require our bifocals to see the numbers on the dash instruments, this is a real problem. As I found out, most prescription sunglasses are not available without polarized lenses. You have to agree to have plastic lenses to get non-polarized ones. However, I solved my problem, interestingly enough, at WalMart Optical, where I was able to order my Varilux lenses nonpolarized, with the progressive bifocals I so need. Now I can see the HUD. This is not an inexpensive option, but then, neither are some of the non-prescription sunglasses which have been discussed.

At the risk of hijacking this thread I wanted to see if anyone in this long thread have experienced the HUD being out of focus. It looks like mine is projecting a little to the left leaving a slight ghost image on the right of the text. If I lean right and look slightly left, then it comes really clear.
With polarized glasses, I noticed the ghosting makes the image even darker compared to when looking at it dead center. |

I ordered a new pair of sunglasses a while back strictly w/out polarization, so no issues after that.
