1200 mile service myths

Is it true at the 1200 mile service they unlock the extra power? Someone at the dealership said they limit the HP or something until the first service but I don't think that's true?

lol not to single you out, but this thread been popping up so frequently.

Yes the break in service allows you to be spyhunter and the car becomes amphibious

but no nothing special just some new fluids and you can now enjoy the madness of past 5k

So, I used to be one of those guys who was confident that this was a myth. That all the driver was feeling was the extra power from going wide open throttle.

That was me up until about 2 weeks ago.

I had a Blackvue dash camera installed in my CS and the shop I go to is owned by a BMW Master Tech who used to be with one of the BMW dealerships out here. I asked him this exact question and I was very surprised by his response.

He said that, starting in 2016, BMW did start detuning M cars until after the 1200 mile service. I asked him how much power and he said somewhere around 25-30%. I had never experienced this because my previous M car was a '14 M5, so it was before they started doing this.

I am very interested to see the difference after my 1200 mile service. Sadly, I am only at 400 miles so far.

myth
You're allowed to use more power by going past 5000rpm, but nothing about the mapping or ecu changes.
These days it's essentially an oil change.

My service advisor said the same thing..."enjoy the extra power". Didn't notice a difference at all. Oil and diff fluid change and unlocking launch control if you have DCT. That's it.

I can confirm my M4cs did not feel any different power wise after break-in service.

I did Euro Delivery for my 2016 M4 and I can confirm that the car didn't exceed 5500 RPM or go over 170 km/h until I had the 2000 km service done in Stuttgart, about a week after I took delivery in Munich. I hung around Munich for a couple of days, then I hung out in the Italian Dolomites for three days, and then in the Swiss Alps for 2 days. Oh, how I wish I had more power and couldn't wait for that extra power to be unleashed. I finally made it to Stuttgart and had the 2000 km service done, and holy shit, I couldn't believe the difference. After leaving Stuttgart, I was able to do 271 km/h on the Autobahn! It was an amazing difference! SO MUCH MORE POWER!

I first encountered the OP years ago when he bought a 335is Coupe, hung out in the E90/E92 forums, and swore that the dashboard had carbon fiber trim. No, it was Dark Glacier Aluminum Trim. I know, because my wife had one, but he insisted that he was right. Later on, he wanted to upgrade his brakes to a BBK on a previous M4, because he "couldn't stop fast enough on the street". He has lots of posts like this. I could go on, but I'm trying to be nice. More than five years later, he hasn't changed.

Did I swear the service gives you more power? No, I asked the question. But enjoy being a belligerent asshole.

Yes, you asked the question "Is it true at the 1200 mile service they unlock the extra power?"

I'll just let your response speak for itself. Just for the record, I was not in any way being belligerent. My first paragraph was satire, and in the second paragraph I merely stated facts. And you've already owned an M4, shouldn't you know the answer to your question already?

I literally have no idea what your second paragraph above had to do with. It made no sense and was based on some comment I made 5 years ago about a car I had 5 bmws ago? Hmm kind of odd you would remember that and spend your time making that comment randomly.

I had an M4, yes, and it was in 2015, which was before the apparent unlock in power at 1200 mile service. I was told by 2 different dealerships and I'm not sure why, so again, I don't think my question was out of line by any means.

Doesn't matter the year, nothing has changed and there is no unlock. It is 100% nonsense that the dealer is feeding you.
