Moving on from F80 - what are your thoughts on my next car choices?

Hi Guys,

I've owned my 2016 F80 for about a year and a half and never really fallen in love with it. It's fast and looks great, but I don't enjoy driving it at all. To give you guys perspective, I bought it with basically 20k miles and it's now at 26k miles.

The biggest thing I hate about it is that it's not fun to rev out- there's no visceral thrill with this car. It sounds like complete garbage.

Rather than keep paying for a car I don't like, I'm going to sell it off and I was basically dead set on getting a 2016 Cayman GT4 which is exactly what I wanted - fast enough, manual, amazing soundtrack, and magical handling.

Until the dealership that I was working with came across a 6 speed manual 2007 Ferrari F430.

Price is exactly the same for both cars- $90K and the F430 has 23K miles on it.

I'm going to test drive it this week, but anyone think I'm crazy for entertaining an F430 over the GT4?

My (hopefully soon to be M3):

Thanks!

How long do you plan to keep either car? F430 is probably my favorite Ferrari of all time, but for long term ownership I think the GT4 would be much cheaper and stress free. Never owned either, so could just be stereotyping.

As a ferrari owner i'd go with the GT4. Its going to be a better car in almost every regard. The only issue is that its a cayman... looks just like a boxster. ferrari is a ferrari.

10 years is a HUGE difference in the car world / technology / build quality.

Both cars will probably hold value pretty good. ferrari being better.

Either of these cars would probably be lifers. At least 10 years minimum.

Yea I hear you on that. I've read that the F430 is pretty reliable and relatively stress free compared to Ferrari's of the past- though of course, the usual Ferrari maintenance costs.

Also it should be said, that I'd leave the Ferrari bone stock outside of window tint. With the GT4, I'd definitely get the mod bug.

Do you have a second car? I'm sorry but the Ferrari is a keeper if you have a second car but as a daily i would have second thoughts. Plus be ready for the maintenance of an 11yr old super car.

I think my vote is for the GT4

If side toy, Ferrari. If daily, or near daily, GT4 + mods

Either would be completely a "fun" car. We have a 2018 S4 and a 2000 Xterra we use daily.

The GT4’s the better car. The Ferrari is there to scratch the Ferrari itch. All depends on what your objective is.

I think you will be happy with the F430 unless you are ok with future maintenance.
If you get the GT4 I am pretty sure you will want something more powerful revving within a month. What you are looking for right now is high revving NA V8+ with the raw drive feeling.
GT4 is a great car but not really an upgrade from F80.
Test drive both cars and you will see huge difference.
Carrera GT, Enzo, LFA are the only cars with better sound than the F430 from my perspective.

Look carefully at the maintenance and make sure your ok with it.

Also you need to really LOVE the feel and sound and experience because objectively, the performance isn't that special anymore.

My $0.02, you should get it. 6MT 430 aren't that easy to come by. Try it out for a year. You can always go with a Gt4 at a later time (like when 718gt4 orders open up and the current ones get ditched)

some say if it isn't a racecar or can't tow a racecar, it's not a worthy choice.

+1. This guy gets it.

Love my Tundra. Perfect for picking up parts from Fedex/UPS when you're overnighting parts from Japan.

The dropping prices off he F430 is making them very tempting. However, I would only get one with a MT, and those are hard to find and much more expensive. Like $150k +

I imagine the MT variants of the 430 will hold value very well, being it's the last MT Ferrari ever (I think).

Garage List
Weekend car - Ferrari
Daily - GT4

Honestly, maintenance and repair costs aside, I would not feel comfortable driving a Ferrari on a regular basis - too much attention. But then again, I like grey sedans....

Interesting. Having owned a GT4 I found your opinion laughable.
Have you drive a GT4 on the track, or have you even driven one?

M4 to GT4 for sure is a step up performance-wise:
Better engine, much lighter and mid-engine chassis, much much better sound.

However I would not daily the GT4:
Clutch is too heavy, twice as heavy as a manual M4.
Chassis is too stiff, it drives like a go-kart. Perfect for the track, tiring for the road.
You need to drive above 4K rpm to have fun. This is opposite to the M4 or any daily driving style.
Road noise, tire noise, engine noise would kill me if I have to sit in traffic with this car.
Too low and you will scrape the bumper.

Get a Cayman S/GTS for daily. Much more refined and livable car.

Reliability for older Ferrari's are not so good. I'd take a 458 or newer.
Go drive F430 and GT4 back to back and see what you like. As others have stated, tech has improved so much from 2007 to 2016. Don't get the F430 because 'it is a Ferrari'.

Don't get me wrong. GT4 is an amazing car and I am actually thinking to purchase one for me in the future. I owned two Boxsters(one auto, one manual), Panamera Turbo before and test driven GT4, 718 Cayman S, 997 TT, 991 TT, and several 911 (not at the track though).
Honestly cars these days feel very very comfortable even with 500+ hp.
Due to too many safety features and technology literally car drives very well for the driver, and that's why we miss older cars.
Pure sound from F430 is very close to F1 machine.

Funny, I am getting an engine from JP as we speak but not overnighting

OP what are you leaning on doing?

As for daily driving the GT4, I did that for a week borrowing my brother's car. It's fine. A pain to have to move the LWB back and forth all the time and you have to watch ground clearance but the car has an interior and no roll cage door bars and sound deadening and AC, so it's perfectly fine to daily.

I can't imagine the maintenance costs on a 12 year old Ferrari nor driving it anywhere semi regularly. But, it is a manual Ferrari so I get the want part.

I still think I would take the GT4 out of the 2.

Just curious, if you didn't need back seats much less four doors what brought you to buying an M3?

I also found this funny.....it's an upgrade in every way except passenger space. OP has already stated his dislike for a couple of things (sound and visceral feel) and the GT4 excels in both. Not to mention the short shifts and overall purpose built feel you experience. The GT4 can be a daily driver for sure with Sofa seats. LWB seats not so much and only because of the ingress and egress procedures you'll adopt. So you know where my vote goes......Phil

You poor thing having to suffer through owning the boring and dreadful m3. I remember you complaining about the car a while back. Just sell it and move on if you hate it so much.

Must be me, but I think this m3 is very fun to rev out, keeps punching all the way up to red line.

My x5m does not do the same, and I can't tell when the engine is at peak power so I will miss shift in manual mode a lot at wot.

if the replacement car has the word ferrari in it, I think the OP bought the wrong car to begin with.
